Metal Gear Saga Volume 1
Metal Gear Saga is the title of two separately produced documentaries released in DVD format covering the Metal Gear franchise, the first one released in 2006 and a second in 2008. The title Metal Gear Saga was originally used by a public presentation of the Metal Gear series Kojima and his staff conducted for the Metal Gear franchise in 2005.
The first volume of Metal Gear Saga was given to customers who pre-ordered the North American version of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence in 2006. The disc came packaged with the initial release of the PAL version of Subsistence. It was never released in Japan.
The documentary covers the development of each game from the series' fictional chronology, beginning with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and progressing to the remainder of the series, briefly touching the then newly-unveiled Metal Gear Solid 4 (Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was not announced yet). The documentary features interviews with Hideo Kojima where he reveals specific details of each game, as well as his thoughts on the NES version of Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge.
The disc contains preview trailers of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence,
Metal Gear Acid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

MGS3 Subsistence
Subsistence was released in Japan on December 22, 2005, later in North America on March 14, 2006, in Europe on October 6, 2006 and in Australia on October 13, 2006. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence continues the Metal Gear Solid series tradition of follow-up enhanced, international version releases. While previous releases, such as Metal Gear Solid: Integral and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance included skill challenge missions and/or side story missions, Subsistence eschews the extra single-player missions to include updated versions of the series' first two games, Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, a brand-new competitive online mode, and a fully 3D, user-controlled camera in the main portion of the game.
Subsistence's online multiplayer component, titled Metal Gear Online, consists of five tournament-style game modes, each with a capacity of up to eight players. This mode pits players, each playing as a generic soldier against each other in deathmatch battles and variations of capture the flag, using stages, items, maneuvers, and units (such as the KGB, GRU or Ocelot Unit) from the main game. Depending on server settings, each round the highest-scoring player in each unit automatically assumes the role of one of the main characters (or Reiko Hinomoto from Rumble Roses), along with unique abilities and/or items. For example, the highest scoring player on the GRU team would assume the role of Major Raikov, leader of the GRU, next round. Konami's Metal Gear Online service for the PlayStation 2 closed in Japan on December 26, 2006, followed by in North America on April 2, 2007 and in Europe on October 30, 2007.
In addition to the older games and the online mode, Subsistence includes many minor features common to international version releases. It includes the downloadable extra camouflage and face paint designs and "Snake vs. Monkey" stages previously exclusive to the European release, the European Extreme difficulty level,[ parody cut scenes and trailers from the official website, and connectivity with Metal Gear Acid 2. The Japanese version also includes a URL for a hidden website that allows the download of OtaClock, a PC and Mac clock program that features Metal Gear Solid series recurring character Otacon. This website is now publicly available

Users and Critics About MGS3
Snake Eater was a commercial success and has sold 3.96 million copies worldwide. Although this is considerably lower than Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which has sold 7 million copies to date, critics were pleased with the new protagonist, Naked Snake—who strongly resembles the series protagonist Solid Snake—after fans were disappointed by Raiden in MGS2. Some fans, as well as some critics, who found MGS2's lengthy dialogues and multitude of plot twists detrimental to the game experience found MGS3's storyline a pleasing throwback to the original Metal Gear Solid, with less of the "philosophical babble" present in Sons of Liberty.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was well received by the media, and was given high scores by some of the most prominent gaming critics. On the review aggregator Game Rankings, the game has an average score of 91% based on 92 reviews. On Metacritic, the game had an average score of 91/100, based on 68 reviews. Gaming website IGN awarded a 9.6/10 and UK-based magazine Edge rated it 8/10. GameSpot, who granted it an 8.7/10, commented that the game is "richly cinematic" and "a great achievement." GameSpy hailed it as "probably the best Metal Gear Solid game yet", and Eurogamer called it "overwhelmingly superior to MGS2: Sons of Liberty" in their review. IGN users voted it the 10th best game of all time in , and the 5th best in the 2008 Top 100 list.
Reviewers had mixed opinions about the game's camouflage system. Edge commented that "laying, camouflaged, in short grass inches away from a patrolling enemy is a gripping twist on stealth," while GameSpy criticized it as "just a number to monitor and not a terribly interesting one." Out of the variety of new features, GameSpot called it "the most important and best implemented."The game has also been criticized for its low frame rate, which has been reduced to 30 fps (compared with Metal Gear Solid 2's 60 fps).
Metal Gear Solid 3's cut scenes have been called "visually exciting and evocative, beautifully shot" by Edge. However, they commented that the script "ranges from awkward to awful" and criticized David Hayter's performance as Snake, concluding that "Snake Eater's speech is not up to the standard of other games, let alone cinema." GameSpot said that some of the humor "falls flat, as if lost in translation from Japanese" and "should appeal to ... hardcore fans but ... takes you out of the moment."
The theme song to Metal Gear Solid 3 won the "Best Original Vocal Song - Pop" from the Game Audio Network Guild at the Game Developers Conference in August 2005, while the game itself won the award for "Best PS2 Game" at 2005's Game Convention in Germany. David Hayter, voice of Snake, was nominated for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences award for "Outstanding Achievement in Character Performance."

Memorable MGS3 Quotes
The Boss: I raised you, and loved you, I've given you weapons, taught you techniques, endowed you with knowledge. There's nothing more for me to give you. All that's left for you to take is my life.
Colonel Volgin: Kuwabara, Kuwabara.
[Volgin's body sparkles from electric bolts]
Colonel Volgin: Ah, what a joyful scene.
The Boss: Colonel Volgin...
Colonel Volgin: Welcome to my country, and to my unit.
Para-Medic: Snake, look at your body!
Naked Snake: Yep... lookin' good.
Para-Medic: Not there.
Naked Snake: Then where?
Para-Medic: You have leeches all over your body!
Ocelot: What's your name?
Naked Snake: Snake.
Ocelot: No, not that name. You're not a snake, and I'm not an ocelot. We're men with names. My name... is Adamska. And you?
Naked Snake: John.
Ocelot: Plain name. But I won't forget it.
EVA: OK, your Raikov disguise is complete. Now they won't stop you no matter what you do.
Naked Snake: Even if I punch someone in the face?
EVA: Right.
Naked Snake: Really?
EVA: Really.
Naked Snake: Why?
EVA: Raikov's just that kind of guy.
Ocelot: [Snake, surrounded by the Ocelot unit, assumes his CQC fighting stance] What is that stance? And that gun?
[the Ocelot unit all laugh at Snake]
Ocelot: [Ocelot flips out his gun and catches it with his right hand] If you're not The Boss... then die!
[Ocelot pulls the trigger, but his gun jams, then Snake proceeds to take down him and every GRU surrounding him]
Naked Snake: You ejected the first bullet by hand, didn't you? I see what you were trying to do, but testing a technique you've only heard about in the middle of battle wasn't very smart. You were asking to have your gun jam on you. Besides, I don't think you're cut out for an automatic in the first place; you tend to twist your elbow a little to absorb the recoil. That's more of a revolver technique.
Ocelot: [pulls out a knife] You... filthy American dog!
[attacks Snake, but Snake easily takes him down]
Naked Snake: But, that was some fancy shooting. You're pretty good.
Ocelot: Pretty good...
Ocelot: I don't approve of your methods!
Colonel Volgin: I wasn't aware my methods needed your approval! I'm in control here!
Ocelot: And that nuclear shell...
Colonel Volgin: Still feeling sore about that? What are you gonna do? Report it to the authorities?
The Boss: Life's end...
[drops the Davy Crockett]
The Boss: Isn't it beautiful? It's almost tragic. When life ends, it gives off a final lingering aroma. Light is but a farewell gift from the darkness to those on their way to die. I've been waiting, Snake, for a long time. Waiting for your birth, your growth, and the finality of today.
The Pain: I am the Pain! I shall send you to a world of anguish beyond your imagination! Let's get started!
The Fury: I am the Fury... The flames of my rage will incinerate you! I came back from space, and as I returned, I had one vision... the world set ablaze! And do you know what I saw? Fury! A great and terrible fury at being alive! Now you will feel the scorching heat of that horrible blackness!
The Fear: I... am the Fear... I shall fill you with fear as you have never experienced before! Come into my web...
The End: ...I have slept... long enough for one day... I have slept enough... for a eternity... I thank you... if you hadn't showed up, I would've slept forever... Now, spirits, grant me the strength to finish this... one... final prey... do you hear me, Snake? I am the End! I am here to send you to your ultimate fate...
Naked Snake: Home in time for dinner.
Major Zero: But if you fail you'll be eating breakfeast, lunch, and all the rest of your meals in the jungle.
Naked Snake: I'm glad I'm not as strange as the Major.
Para-Medic: The majors not strange...
Major Zero: [in background] My tea's gone! Who's drunk it? How am I supposed to have teatime without tea?
Para-Medic: Well, not that strange...
Major Zero: [in background] My scone's gone too!
Sigint: Snake, why are you smoking a cigarette?
Naked Snake: It's a cigar.
Sigint: Cigar, cigarette, same thing.
Naked Snake: It's *not* the same thing!
Sigint: Snake, what's up? Why are you naked? I know there's a "NAKED" option under "UNIFORM" that lets you take off the upper part of your uniform. But without a shirt on, your camouflage sucks, and your stamina goes down faster. You don't get any advantages whatsoever.
Naked Snake: Sure there are.
Sigint: Like what?
Naked Snake: It feels good.
Sigint: ...Man, you do whatever you want.
Naked Snake: I will, thanks. Just one question, though.
Sigint: What?
Naked Snake: Is there a way to take off my pants?
Sigint: Say what?
Naked Snake: My pants, can I...
Sigint: Aw, hell no! This FOX unit is a nut fest!
Colonel Campbell: [after "accidentally" killing Ocelot] Snake, what have you done? You've changed history. You've created a Time Paradox!
Para-Medic: [On the radio] Snake, have you seen "007: From Russia with Love"?
Naked Snake: I don't like those movie. Real spies are nothing like James Bond. It's pure fantasy.
Para-Medic: Snake, I don't think the Major's going to like you saying that.
Naked Snake: And even though it's fiction. I can't help but comparing myself to Bond.
Major Zero: What exactly don't you like about James Bond? Is it the fantastic gadgets? The cars? The guns?
Naked Snake: Major...!
Major Zero: Snake, wouldn't you like to have a gun shaped like a pen?
Naked Snake: What good is a pen going to do me in the jungle? I'd look like a fool.
Major Zero: Then what about a snake-shaped gun? You could make it look like you're grappling with a giant snake and then get a shot in on the enemy while they're distracted.
Naked Snake: Ok, now you're being ridiculous.
Naked Snake: EVA, about the contents of the backpack you got for me...
EVA: Is there something missing?
Naked Snake: Yeah, all of my food.
EVA: It wasn't me! All those snakes and crocodiles and suspicious-looking mushrooms... I wouldn't eat that stuff even if you paid me!
Naked Snake: So who was it?
EVA: It was Ocelot.
Naked Snake: Ocelot?
EVA: He said he wanted to eat the same things you did.
Naked Snake: Why would he do that?
EVA: You haven't figured it out?
Naked Snake: No.
EVA: You are dense.
Para-Medic: I think it really does look good. It reminds me of "The Alligator People."
Naked Snake: Oh... the what?
Para-Medic: "The Alligator People." It's a science fiction movie. You've never heard of it?
Naked Snake: No.
Para-Medic: Oh... well you should see it sometime. It's about this guy who gets hurt in a car accident and tries to heal his wounds by injecting himself with a crocodile serum, but then his head turns into a crocodile head. You look just like him with that mask on. That's awesome.
Naked Snake: Right.

MGS3 Music
Snake Eater's musical score was composed by Norihiko Hibino and Harry Gregson-Williams, who provided material for both cut scenes and the game itself. Hibino wrote the game's opening theme, "Snake Eater", a distinctly Bond-like vocal track which also appears in the game proper, as performed by Cynthia Harrell. Composer and lyricist Rika Muranaka provides a song called "Don't Be Afraid" which is played during the ending for the game. The song is performed by Elisa Fiorillo.
In a break from tradition, one of the ending themes of the game is not an in-house production, but Starsailor's "Way To Fall". Hideo Kojima later revealed in his blog that he originally wanted to use "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes" (by David Bowie) for the ending themes because of the space development theme of the game, but during the game's development that theme lost its significance. One of his colleagues then advised him to listen to Stellastarr*, but Kojima heard Starsailor. He liked the song "Way To Fall" and chose it as an ending theme.

MGS3 Weapons
Ak-47
The AK-47 is a 7.62 mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov in two versions: the fixed stock AK-47 and the AKS-47.
Design work on the AK began in 1944. In 1946 the rifle was presented for official military trials, and a year later the fixed stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Red Army (the folding stock model was developed later). The AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces in 1949. It is also used by the majority of the member states of the former Warsaw Pact. The AK-47 was also used as a basis for the development of many other types of individual and crew-served firearms.
It was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability, low production cost and ease of use, remains the most widely used assault rifle in the world - so much so that more AK-type rifles have been produced than all other assault rifles combined.
The EZ Gun
The EZ Gun is a weapon that appears in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It is a small tranquilizer gun with a built-in suppressor, unlimited ammo and laser sight. By unknown reasons having this gun equipped raises Naked Snake's Camo index to 80 percent and lowers the consumption of stamina. (It can even cause stamina to increase if Snake is traveling light and standing still.)
The EZ gun can be obtained by capturing or killing all 47 types of plants and animals in the game, including the four medicinal plants. It is also found in Snake's backpack upon starting on the Very Easy difficulty level.
Fork
As a piece of cutlery or kitchenware, a fork is a tool consisting of a handle with several narrow tines (usually two, three or four) on one end. The fork, as an eating utensil, has been a feature primarily of the West, whereas in East Asia chopsticks have been more prevalent. Today, forks are increasingly available throughout East Asia. The utensil (usually metal) is used to lift food to the mouth or to hold food in place while cooking or cutting it. Food can be lifted either by spearing it on the tines, or by collecting it on top of the tines, and holding it atop the tines horizontally. To allow for this spoon-like use, the tines are often curved slightly upward.
Handkerchief
A handkerchief is a form of a kerchief, typically a square of fabric that can be carried in the pocket, for personal hygiene purposes such as wiping one's hands or blowing one's nose, but also used as a decorative accessory in a suit pocket. Richard II of England is said to have invented the handkerchief, as "little pieces [of cloth] for the lord King to wipe and clean his nose," appear in his Household Rolls or accounts, which is the first documented use of them.
The material of a handkerchief can be symbolic of the social-economic class of the user, not only because some materials are more expensive, but because some materials are more absorbent and practical for those who use a handkerchief for more than style. Handkerchiefs are typically made of cotton, cotton-synthetic blend, synthetic fabric, silk, or linen.
M1911
The M1911 is a single-action, semi-automatic pistol (handgun) chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It was designed by John M. Browning, and was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985, and is still carried by some U.S. forces. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Its formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original Model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era. In total, the United States procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life.
M37
The M37 is an American-made shotgun. First appearing in 1937, the Ithaca M37 is sometimes called the "Featherlight" due to its light weight. MGS3's M37 has a sawed-off barrel and stock, further reducing the weight to 2.9 kg (6.4 lbs), which is exceptionally light for a shotgun. It carries four 12-gauge shells in a tube magazine and operates using a pump action, meaning there is a delay in between shots. Many guards carry the M37, and Snake can even use one himself. The M37 is extremely powerful, capable of blowing enemies away and doing serious damage. Most guards will be killed in one blast, but the shot's effectiveness decreases over range. The Pain's hornet shield can be penetrated by three shotgun blasts, leaving him vulnerable. The M37 also has a slow reload rate and this can be a deadly giveaway in combat since it only carries 4 rounds. A strategy to prevent such reload is to quickly un-equip it and re-equip it again which then is present with a full magazine.
M63
The Stoner M63 is an American-made modular system weapon. It was designed in 1963 by Eugene Stoner, the inventor of the previous M16 rifle. The Stoner M63 was designed to be able to change parts easily to suit different roles, ranging from a compact carbine to a full assault rifle to a light machine gun to even a mounted medium machine gun.
Snake finds the light machine gun variant during Operation Snake Eater. It fires 5.56 x 45mm ammunition from a 100-round disintegrating belt. The M63 can only be fired in full-automatic mode. It is very heavy, weighing 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs), the second heaviest weapon Snake can carry during Operation Snake Eater after the RPG-7. It takes about 5 seconds to reload. The M63 can only be fired from the hip, making it less accurate than the AK-47 and the XM16E1, but the huge, 100-round belt makes it a good "run and gun" weapon. Despite such poor accuracy, it posseses deadly firepower, able to decimate entire attack teams and is one of the recommended weapons during the GRU's pursuit against Snake and EVA in MGS3.
MK22
The Mk.22 Mod 0 "Hush Puppy" is a Smith & Wesson Model 39 modified for military purposes. It is a mil-spec pistol firing the 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge and is capable of attaching a silencer. The Mk.22 was used by special forces units during the Vietnam War; regular troops were generally issued the older and more powerful M1911A1 as a sidearm.
Snake's Mk.22 uses 9x19mm tranquilizer darts instead of lethal rounds. It holds eight rounds in a single-stack magazine and uses a slide-lock mechanism, enhancing the suppression effect but reducing the rate of fire. The Mk.22 has been fitted with taller iron sights so the gun can be used more easily with a suppressor. Like the M1911A1, the Mk.22 can be used in conjunction with a knife for CQC.
Mosin Nagant
The Mosin-Nagant is a bolt-action, internal magazine fed, military rifle that was used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and various Eastern bloc nations. Also known as the Three-Line Rifle it was the first to use the 7.62x54mmR cartridge. As a front-line rifle, the Mosin-Nagant served in various forms from 1891 until the 1960s in many Eastern European nations, when the sniper rifle variant was replaced by the SVD . The Mosin-Nagant is still used in many conflicts due to its ruggedness and the vast number produced during World War II.
The Patriot
The Patriot was an assault pistol made specially for The Boss, who used it during the Cold War.
The Patriot was a modified version of a Colt XM-16E1, with a shortened barrel and the stock removed. It was designed to create a pistol that combined the feel and quick handling of a handgun with the force of a rifle. The length of the barrel meant that The Patriot had a strong recoil, and was notoriously difficult to aim. The fact that The Boss used it one-handed was a testament to her skill. It used 5.56 x 45mm ammunition and was fitted with a hundred-round drum magazine. It was rumored that The Patriot never ran out of ammo, according to Sigint, because the internal feed mechanism was shaped like an infinity symbol. The blast of the muzzle was said to resemble the sound of a threatened rattlesnake, and that no one who heard the sound would live to tell the tale.
RPG-7
The RPG-7 is a widely-produced, portable, shoulder-launched, anti-tank rocket propelled grenade weapon. Originally the RPG-7 and its predecessor, the RPG-2, were designed by the Soviet Union, and now manufactured by the Bazalt company. The weapon has the GRAU index 6G3.
The ruggedness, simplicity, low cost, and effectiveness of the RPG-7 have made it the most widely used anti-tank weapon in the world. Currently around 40 countries use the weapon, and it is manufactured in a number of variants by nine countries. It is also popular with irregular and guerrilla forces. The RPG has been used in almost all conflicts across all continents since the mid-1960s from the Vietnam War to the present day War in Afghanistan and Iraq War.
Scorpion
The Škorpion vz. 61 is a Czechoslovakian 7.65 mm submachine gun by the Česká Zbrojovka arms factory in Uherský Brod. Although it was developed for use with security forces, the submachine gun was also accepted into service with the Czechoslovak Army, as a personal sidearm for lower-ranking army staff, vehicle drivers, armored vehicle personnel and special forces. Currently the weapon is in use with the armed forces of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Angola, Croatia, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Mozambique and Uganda. Production rights to the submachine gun were also acquired by the Yugoslavian Crvena Zastava factory , which license-built the weapon in the 1980s as the M84. It features a synthetic pistol grip compared to the original version (a civilian, semi-automatic pistol version was also produced, known as the M84A, also available in 9x17mm Short).
Single Action Army(SAA)
The Colt Single Action Army Revolver is a powerful single action revolver holding six rounds of .45 Long Colt ammunition. The Single Action Army was designed for the US cavalry by Colt's Manufacturing Company and adopted in 1873.
Revolver Ocelot adopted this sidearm as his weapon of choice after his semiautomatic Makarov pistol jammed during combat with Naked Snake. Snake advised Ocelot his shooting style would better suit a revolver, and sure enough, Ocelot took his advice and became a master with the Single Action Army. This weapon was responsible for the loss of Snake's right eye during his time in captivity at Groznyj Grad during the Cold War.
Survival Knife
Survival knives are knives intended for survival purposes when lost in a wilderness environment. Military units issue some type of survival knife to pilots in the event they may be shot down. Hunters, hikers, and outdoor sport enthusiasts use survival knives. Some survival knives are heavy-bladed and thick; others are lightweight or fold in order to save weight and bulk as part of a larger survival kit. Their functions often include serving as a hunting knife.
SVD
The SVD (Russian: Снайперская винтовка Драгунова, Snayperskaya vintovka Dragunova), "Dragunov sniper rifle", is a 7.62 mm semi-automatic sniper rifle, developed in the former Soviet Union. It was selected as the winner of a contest that included three competing designs: the first was a rifle designed by Sergei Simonov (known as the SSV-58), the second – by Alexander Konstantinov (prototype designated 2B-W10) and the third rifle, the SVD-137 was a design by Evgeny Dragunov. Extensive testing of the rifles in variable environmental conditions resulted in E. F. Dragunov’s design being accepted into service in 1963. At the same time an initial pre-production batch of 200 rifles was assembled, and from 1964 serial production was carried out at Izhmash. Since then, the SVD has become the standard squad support weapon of several countries, including those of the former Warsaw Pact, among them Poland (since 1966). Licensed production of the rifle was established in China (Type 79 and Type 85) and Iraq
White Phosphorus Grenade
White phosphorus (WP) is a flare- and smoke-producing incendiary weapon,[1] or smoke-screening agent, made from a common allotrope of the chemical element phosphorus. White phosphorus bombs and shells are incendiary devices, but can also be used as an offensive anti-personnel flame compound capable of causing serious burns or death.[2] The agent is used in bombs, artillery shells, and mortar shells which burst into burning flakes of phosphorus upon impact. White phosphorus is commonly referred to in military jargon as "WP". The slang term "Willy(ie) Pete" or "Willy(ie) Peter", dating from the First World War and common at least through the Vietnam era, is still occasionally heard.
XM16E1
The XM16E1 is an American-made assault rifle, still in development at the time of Operation Snake Eater. It fires small-caliber, high-velocity 5.56 x 45mm rounds from a 20-round magazine and replaced the older, heavier M14 rifle in the early 1960's. It is painted with a camouflage pattern and is equipped with several other modifications designed specifically for jungle combat. The XM16E1 can equip a suppressor and can switch between semi-automatic, three-round-burst, and full-automatic mode. This allows the XM16E1 to perform many versatile roles, from full-on assault to silent sniping from a distance. The rifle has heavy recoil in full-automatic mode, however, but the recoil can be controlled more easily by kneeling or lying down. It is fairly heavy, weighing 2.9 kg (6.4 lbs) and takes about 1 second to reload. Although fairly heavy, it is lighter than its Soviet counterpart, the AK-47 which weights 3.5kg.
C3
Plastic explosive is a specialised form of explosive material. It is soft and hand malleable and may have the added benefit of being usable over a wider temperature range than pure explosive. The first plastic explosive was Gelignite, invented by Alfred Nobel in 1875. During and just after World War II a number of new RDX-based explosives were developed, including Compositions C, C2, and eventually C3. Together with RDX these incorporate various plasticisers to decrease sensitivity and make the composition plastic. C3 was effective but proved to be too brittle in cold weather. In the 1960s it was replaced by C4.
Smoke Grenade
Smoke grenades are canister-type grenades used as ground-to-ground or ground-to-air signaling devices, target or landing zone marking devices, or a screening devices for unit movements. Smoke grenades are normally considered non lethal, although incorrect use may cause injury or fatality. The body consists of a sheet steel cylinder with a few emission holes on top and at the bottom to allow smoke release when the grenade is ignited. The filler consists of 250 to 350 grams of colored (red, green, orange, gray, yellow, blue, white, black, or violet) smoke mixture (mostly potassium chlorate, lactose and a dye). The reaction is exothermic and grenade casings will remain scalding hot for some time even after the grenade is no longer emitting smoke.
Other weapons include: Claymore, Chaff Grenades, TNT, whose description you can see at MGS 1/2 weapon posts.

MGS3 Time Paradox
Because Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a prequel to the other games in the Metal Gear Solid series, there are certain events that would damage the continuity of the Metal Gear timeline, This causes a Time Paradox.
Snake
If Naked Snake is killed, the game comes up with the traditional Game Over page displaying "SNAKE IS DEAD". After a little while (or quickly if you select Exit instead of Continue) "SNAKE IS DEAD" changes to "TIME PARADOX". This is because Naked Snake is revealed at the end of the game to be Big Boss, the genetic father of Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake, and if he was to die, the events of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots could not take place.
Sokolov
A grenade can be thrown through the window of the room Sokolov is being held in, bringing up the Game Over page displaying "MISSION FAILED". His death compromises the Virtuous Mission, and he would not be able to complete the Shagohod.
Ocelot
Ocelot can be killed if Snake shoots his unconscious body near the end of the Virtuous Mission, bringing up the Game Over screen and the message "OCELOT IS DEAD". Like Snake, Ocelot causes a Time Paradox because of his involvement in future games. Throughout the rest of the game, he also plays a major role; he switches the Philosophers' Legacy microfilm for a fake and is responsible for the loss of Snake's right eye. Ocelot is also one of the founding members of the Patriots.
EVA
If EVA is killed, a Time Paradox is created, bringing up the message "EVA IS DEAD". Snake needs her to pilot the Wig Aircraft. She was also important in stealing the Philosophers' Legacy as the Boss used her to give it to Snake (Although this was most likely a fake).Eva also had a role in forming The Patriots. Eva has a role in the events of MGS4, going by the codename of Big Mama which turns out to be Snakes surrogate mother.

MGS3 Secrets
Character Secrets
Sokolov
When in Rassvet during the Virtuous Mission, if you shoot bullets through the windows of the house Sokolov is being kept in, he'll cry out, "Stop!" If a grenade is thrown through the window, Sokolov will be killed, causing a Time Paradox. Throwing a snake into the room causes Sokolov to say, "Get off me!" If you try to enter Sokolov's room wearing the Raikov mask, Major Zero will call you and demand you take it off, just because Sokolov "won't like it."
Ocelot
Killing Ocelot after Naked Snake knocks him unconscious at the beginning of the game results in a Time Paradox. When fighting him at Bolshaya Past, if you dangle off the cliff, the Ocelot Unit will laugh at Snake. If you shoot at a beehive while fighting him, he will spin his revolvers to kill them, leaving him open for shots for a few seconds. You can have a duel with Ocelot by walking up to the edge of the cliff. Upon seeing you do this, Ocelot will do the same and request a duel. If you play with your SAA, Ocelot will notice this and juggle his. You can also shoot Ocelot's hat off. Wearing the Crocodile Cap during the fight will result in the Ocelot Unit laughing at Snake.
The End
When the cutscene at Ponizovje finishes, you will have a short amount of time to shoot him. However, doing this means that he will be replaced by the Ocelot Unit during the fight at Sokrovenno. To kill him properly, acquire the SVD sniper rifle from the dock to the left before going into the main warehouse. When The End explodes, be sure to move quickly or you will be hit by the flying wheel of the wheelchair.
When you are fighting The End at Sokrovenno, save the game and play it again in a week or set the PlayStation 2's clock forward a week. When you starting playing, a cutscene will begin with Snake sneaking up on The End, only to find him dead from having to wait so long. Or if you set it forward 3 or 4 days, there will be a cut scene of The End sneaking up on you. That is why when you save once you begin the battle with The End, Para Medic says she has a bad feeling and warns you to come back soon.
You can obtain The End's sniper, the Mosin Nagant, by wearing down his stamina. To obtain his camouflage, you have to hold him up and point the gun at his head and away from his head three times. Wearing it when fighting him in Sokrovenno results in the stealth meter going to 100%.
To easily find The End's location, use the Konami Code. Open up the map and press the folliwng buttons on the d-pad: ↑, ↑, ↓, ↓, ←, →, ←, →, , and . The End's location will then be revealed on the map. If you exit the map or leave the screen, you will have to input it again.
Granin
Before entering Granin's room, you can shoot objects in his room, resulting in him yelling, "Quiet!" After speaking with him, if you stay outside his room, you'll hear him talk about random things. Knocking on his door will also irritate him.
Volgin
When Colonel Volgin is about to torture Snake, depending on how many serious injuries Snake has suffered, you will get a certain response. For many serious injuries, Volgin will say, "You're a tough one my friend, a lesser man would be dead by now." For a moderate amount of serious injuries, Volgin will say, "Hmm... you've certainly seen your share of battles. Consider yourself lucky. I am about to show you what hell is really like." And for very few serious injuries, Volgin will say, "What a beautiful body you have, like a newborn baby. But not for long..."
If you hold L2 during the torture sequence, Snake will not be hurt at all.
When Snake fights Volgin, if you wear the mask resembling Raikov, he will slowly walk up to Snake, questioning him if he is really Raikov. This leaves him open for some easy headshots. You can also throw a Russian Glowcap on the floor, which will absorb the electrical shocks of Volgin. If you have captured a Tree Frog, you can set it free near Volgin, resulting in him attacking it. You may also throw a chaff grenade, as it disrupts his electric currents.
Guards
Blowing up certain buildings in an area using TNT effects the guards in that area.
To make the sentries hungry, demolish the buildings that contain food. Sentries will then start complaining about how hungry they are, making them easier to find. They can also be distracted with food that you throw out. You can even throw out poisoned food to kill them when they eat it. Hungry soldiers can also be knocked out faster when taken down.
You can also demolish the buildings that contain ammo. The effect that this has is that guards will have a very limited supply of ammo. First they will use their rifle, with a two clip reload maximum. Last, they will use their pistols with a seemingly infinite clip.
Poisonous Creatures
Tranquilizing a poisonous snake or scorpion (etc) traps it in a cage. You can then add it to your selection of weapons. While it's selected, throw it at a guard, they will get bitten and die.

If Snake selects the unloaded revolver which is on the right during the final confrontation with Ocelot, he will start the next playthrough with an SAA.
Completing the game allows Snake to begin the next time with his Patriot machine gun, complete with infinite ammo.
Beating the game also gives Snake the Tuxedo camouflage.
If you finish the game with a Tsuchinoko in your inventory, you will be awarded with the "Infinity Face Camo" the next time you play, which works similar to the Bandana in other Metal Gear Games.
Viewing all the cutscenes in-game will unlock Peep Show, which includes scenes designed to focus on EVA and Raikov's "sexiness". Alternatively, viewing the cutscenes where Naked Snake and EVA are inside the cave with the Secret Theater will also unlock the Peep Show.
Clearing the game with no alerts unlocks the stealth camo. Another method to unlock it is to shoot all 64 Kerotan Frogs.
The Kerotan Frogs
There are 64 Kerotan Frogs in the game, one in every area. Areas which Snake visits during both the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater have two different frogs. Shooting all 64 frogs gives Snake the Stealth Camouflage item the next playthrough, along with the rank of "Kerotan".
Prison Cell
Radio Frequency
The radio frequency to escape the cell can be seen a number of times throughout the game.
In the cut scene where Snake's discovered and beat by Colonel Volgin a few times on the top left corner of the blue print is the frequency.
During the torture scene if you press R1 you will see The Sorrow holding up a sign containing the frequency
If you throw the food back to Johnny three times a cutscene will happen. Press R1 and you will see the code on the back of the photograph of his family.
When Sokolov and Snake are conversing in the west wing, the frequency can be seen at the top of a Shagohod blueprint.
In the Survival Viewer, press R1 to view Snake, then spin Snake around and when you return to the game he will puke. Johnny will open the door to investigate and Snake can use the opportunity to attack.
Remove the bullet The Boss shot you with by using the Fork. This will allow Snake to use the Fake Death Pill, which can be used to escape the cell as well.
Guy Savage
Go to sleep (save) in the prison cell. When you load the file, you'll get to play the Guy Savage mini-game, which is apparently Snake's nightmare. Afterwards, call Major Zero so he can remind Snake what year it is (in-game wise), call Sigint so he can share his worst nightmare, call EVA so she can offer Snake sympathy, and call Para-Medic so Snake can scold her for talking about Dracula and making him have the nightmare.
Cutscene Secrets
Transmitter
Leave the transmitter in Snake's back when you leave the cell. When you arrive at the cave where you meet EVA, it will trigger a hilarious cutscene where EVA takes the transmitter out for you.
Last view of Ocelot
During the award ceremony with the President, if you press R1 and look at the window you will see Ocelot looking in.
C3 Countdown Clock
During the cutscene after you plant the C3, press R1 at the right time to see The Sorrow holding a countdown clock, showing how long until the C3 explodes.
The Boss and The Sorrow
After you deliver the final blow to The Boss, press R1 when the horse neighs, and you shall see The Boss and The Sorrow as ghostly apparitions watching Snake, smiling at him, as they disappear into the air.
Opening Sequence
During the song in the opening sequence, press R1 to provide some backup vocals.

The opening scene to the game is not only long, but it's a nice cinema. Just
remember that you can press and hold R1 when it appears onscreen to look
through the eyes of the man you will be playing as, Snake.

The first area of the game. Don't worry, there are no enemies here. After
Snake is done talking with the Major on radio, get a feel for the game by
walking around and crawling. Remember that the Major says that he always
refers north as up, south as down, east as right, and west as left. I will be
using the same references. Got it?
Go east, then north once you reach the dead end. Pick up the box by walking
over it. It's a life medicine. Slide down the hill, then press Triangle while
next to the central tree with the ivy on it. You will climb it. Walk to the
end of the branch, then press Triangle when you're under the backpack to swing
down and get it.
This is a good area to hunt for food, because there aren't any enemies. Look
on the ground for snakes. They aren't hard to miss. Walk up to one and press
Circle three times to kick the snake, killing it. Pick it up, and you can
access the food in the Survival Viewer. You can use the Mk22 against it too,
but there's no need to waste bullets, is there? Head north into the next area.

For your second area, this place can be dangerous. There are numerous gavials
scattered along the swamp, and they can hurt you. Use your Mk22 to
tranquilize them from a distance. If you're brave (or stupid), you can kill
the gavials with your knife, but I don't recommend it. Most of the area is
covered in quicksand, so stay near the edges. Search the grass near the first
animal for bug juice, then continue east in the grass to find grenades.
Go north through the quicksand and proceed onto the island. Watch out for the
two gavials. Aim up in the tree and shoot the hornet's nest. Head off of the
island towards the west side of the swamp. There will be more gavials, so
avoid them and collect the suppressor in the western corner of the swamp.
Continue east through the quicksand until you reach the northern bank. Walk
down the path, shoot the fruit from the trees, and continue to the next area.

Ooh, guards! This is where you really can't run around anymore. First off,
crawl in the crass in front of you. If you move around the camera a bit, you
should see a guard coming straight ahead. Equip the Leaf Camouflage and wait
until the guard is close enough for firing range.
Now, I must admit, I was awful at this area, because I'm not used to not
having crosshairs for games. So what I did is that if I wanted to aim for a
guy's head, don't aim at his head, aim a little below. If you're a pro at MGS
games, then just tranq him in the face.
Unequip everything, and press Square to drag hiss unconcious body into the
tall grass. Knife him to death, and get up, and hide behind trees until you
see a fork in the road. When the right path is accessible, head right and up
the hill. At the top, you will find the Dragunov Sniper Rifle. You can use it
if you want, but it's very noisy, so guards can spot you easier if you use it.
Head back down the hill, and crawl under the tree trunk to find bug juice.
You can wait for the next enemy to come along. Crawl out of the other side of
the trunk and into the tall grass. You can either tranq him or use some CQC,
it's your choice. Either way, drag his body away from any guards' sight and
kill him.
You can pick him up and put him down so he drops ammo. It's a useful technique
called "shaking". Head north, and tranq any guards in your way. Instead of
going straight the whole time, head east once the path is open. Crouch and
look around for any guards.
If the coast is clear, make a mad dash eastwards and a little north until you
find another tree trunk. Crawl in it and collect the thermal goggles. There
should be another enemy in front of you, so tranq and knife him. If at any
time, an enemy sees you, quickly tranq him and hide in the tree trunk before
reinforcements see you.
Once all the guards are eliminated, head to the western side and search the
grass to find grenades. You can hunt for wildlife in the area, but if you're
fine, then head north until you find a center pathway. Head up the path to the
next area.

One little item found here can make the whole area easy as hell: the hornet's
nest. Look down the ledge at the guard. Look above him. There should be a
hornet's nest in the tree right above him.
Shoot the nest, angering the hornets and attacking the guard. The guard runs
across the bridge, and the hornets end up attacking all of the other gaurds,
chasing them out of the area! For some strange reason, like, if you miss the
nest and alert the guard, simply tranq and kill the lone guard, then snipe the
two on the bridge.
Bring the guard's unconcious body next to the other two on the bridge. Slice
the ropes on either side of the bridge, and the bridge will slide, sliding
the bodies right off of the bridge and into the river. That was easy, wasn't
it? You'll probably slide with the bodies. If you fall to the edge, Snake
will grab on the edge. Press Triangle to climb back onto the bridge.
Across the bridge, collect the mushrooms on the base of the tree. Head west,
then south down the small tunnel. You will come to the edge of the cliff.
Shimmy across, and you'll end up in a small alcove under the bridge. Collect
the XM16E1 and Pentazemin, then head back across and up the tunnel. Go west
into the next area.

After the cutscene, head to the side of the right-hand wall. Crawl, and there
will be an opening on the eastern side of it. Crawl through to the other
side. A guard will be patrolling down the road. Once he gets inbetween the
two brick walls, get behind him and perform CQC to knock him out. Drag him
into the grass and knife him. Head up the pathway towards the eastern side.
When you come up to the building, hide behind a wall and check that the coast
is clear, then enter. You can find an M37 behind some crates.
Move up the stairs. Only proceed up the first flight, then look above you at
the platform. A guard shoud be ducking and looking around. He can't see you,
so tranq him in the face. Go up the next flight of stairs and knife him on
the upper level (I love that phrase).
Collect the suppressor and ammo for your XM16E1. Go back down the stairs, move
east and hide behind some stacked cardboard boxes. A guard should come past
and walk right next to you without seeing you. Use CQC on him and slit his
throat or whatever. Just don't make noise.
Head back towards the eastern side of the ruined building and look on the
wall for a ladder. Climb up to gain access to the roof. Shoot some Sunda-
Whistling Thrushes, and go back to the building. Go north all the way to the
end of the building, and dive through the opening on the east side. If there
is a guard waiting for you, take him out with CQC or your Mk22. Head south,
then east in the small room. Open the door to encounter Sokolov.
After the cutscene, head back to Dremuchij North. A rather long cutscene will
ensue, so kick back and relax. Once the cutscene ends, you will have to cure
your injuries. Open the survival viewer, and since Para-medic will be holding
your hand through the whole thing; listen to her orders and you'll be fine.
You have just beaten the Prologue!

scene a little more. Eva gives you an Mk22, an M191A11 and a Scientist
Camouflage. She tells you to rest.

them suffer the same fate by chucking a grenade at them. You can take out at
least five out of the eight soldiers this way.
Go through the opening and into the building. Jump on the crates to the
northwest to obtain the Cardboard Box A. Return to Sokolov was held and open
the locker in the corner to get Thermal Goggles. Exit the room and in the
corner is a Mine Detector. Pick it up, then head west. When you reach the
stairs, go up them and get the AK-47 on the platform. From here, you can get
a bird's eye view of most of the area. Pick off the guard who is to the left
of you immediately.
Jump down and go back east. When you can go no further, continue north past
some barrels. When you reach the boxes on the eastern side, bang on them to
attract the soldier who is right on the other side of them. Kill him, then
proceed north then west. Keep going west until you reach a dead end. Pick up
the Zombie Face Paint. Go back to where the guard near the boxes was and aim
towards the roof. Shoot a couple times to alert a guard on the rooftop. When
he peeks over the edge, pop a cap in his head to take out the last soldier.

A cutscene will occur, where Ocelot gets served yet again, but by Eva this
time in a rather painful way. Eva will crash through a gate in the northeast

attract some guards. CQC a guard if he's alone. If not, then unleash your AK-
47 on all of them. Shake their bodies for goods, then proceed west. Avoid the
quicksand by staying on the left side, and follow the lone guard. Stalk him,
then CQC him if the coast is clear. Drag his body in the grass (funny, you
can't throw bodies into quicksand).
If guards become cautioned, hide in the grass and tranq then as they
approach. Kill them, and backtrack towards the quicksand. Head back south,
then turn east when the quicksand ends. Jump on the platforms and shimmy
along the cliffside. Make sure you don't fall off, and when you reach the
widened ledge, pick up the Splitter camo. Jump down, then proceed north.
Walk west along the electric fence, but proceed slowly. There may be a guard
on patrol. Snipe him, and enter the opening past the electric fences. There
shouldn't be any guards past this point. Head west and go inside the hollowed
tree on the west side to obtain the Choco Chip camouflage. This time, take
the right path; it makes things easier in the next area.

This level is very, very big. From the start, look straight ahead. A guard
will be patrolling right ahead of you. CQC him when the time is right, and if
anyone sees you, run to the ditch and dive in it. Equip Sqaure Camo to stay
hidden, and crawl around the base. You will find Snow Face Paint and Mk22
Ammo if you make a whole lap around. At the other side, hop out and tranq any
nearby guards. Go left until you reach a building.
Go inside and collect any medicinal items. Go east to the next building. I
actually reccommend alerting guards. Run into the building on the far right,
and when enemies open the door to get you, you'll be right there with a gun
in their face. Do this to take out a bunch of enemies. Get all the ammo and
such, then head south towards the helicopter. If there are any enemies,
navigate around the helicopter and CQC or tranq them.
Machine guns stationed in the corners of the base work well to conserve your
ammo. navigate around the outer edges of the base, taking out any sentries on
patrol. Then, make your way into the base. From where you started, go
northwest until you reach a ladder. Climb up the ladder and pick up the Water
Camo in the top-left corner of the roof. Go back down, and take out any
enemies inside. Go back to those two huts in the eastern side of the area.
Equip TNT, then place them on the wall with Square.
Run out of the building, and when you're in a safe position, press Circle to
detonate and destroy the building. Do the same with the next building, and
with the helicopter. Once they are all destroyed, head north to the next area.

Walk to this area to trigger a cutscene between Snake and Ocelot. He wants to
fight you in a one-on-one duel. Only pistols. No interference.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: Ocelot
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The area for the fight will be a large canyon. Ocelot is on one side, and
Snake is on the other. Ocelot will run beind boulders and trees while peeking
out of the sides to shoot you. Stay behind rocks of your own and when he
scurries by, try to get a shot or two with your M1911A1 or Mk22 for the
stamina kill. He will stop in the middle of the open area and try to get a
good shot on you. That's when you shoot him in the head numerous times.
Look for the hornet's nests on the trees. When Ocelot runs under a rock,
shoot the hornet's nest above his hiding place to chase him out of hiding.
You can get a few shots off of him when he's panicking. If you ever run out
of ammo, head south to a tree. There are grenades high in the tree and there
is gun ammo in the western part of the canyon. It doesn't hurt to explore for
item when the battle is still going on.
When you take out about half of Ocelot's health, he starts getting more
talented and instead of simply firing at you, he will ricochet shots off of
rocks to hit you, so there aren't many places to hide and cover. If you run
out of M1911A1 ammo entirely, then switch to the AK-47. Ocelot wants a pistol
duel, and if you use the AK-47, he considers it to be "cheating" and his
soldiers fire at you. If you're out of all other ammo then there is really no
other choice than to use it.
Ocelot will take a long time to reload during the fight. If you hear the
noise of clicking guns and such, then he's reloading. He may take a while, so
you can even throw a grenade at a rock or tree to blast him out of hiding. The
blast will hurt him and make him run away to another location. The battle is
not too hard, so you will probably have little trouble.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once the battle ends, another cutscene will start up. The Pain will make an
appearance, interrupting the duel. He sends his hornets to attack everyone.
Ocelot flees, leaving his men to die at the hands of the hornets' lethal
stings. Snake, in an attempt to lose the bugs, takes cover and jumps into a
crevice leading to an underground cave. That's the end of Mission 2!

Grenades, Grenades
Food: Russian Ration, Rat, Vampire Bat, Kenyan Mangrove Crab, Taiwanese
Cobra, Reticulated Python, Otton Frog, Russian Glowcap
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This cave area is very dark, and you WILL have trouble finding out where to
go. I will try my best to help you, but it may be confusing. I will only
navigate you to the most important items. If you wish to find all of the
items, then have fun wandering around.
From the start, head east to the large cavern. Walk along the western wall and
descend through the first passageway on the left. Continue straight, and in
between the two waterfalls is a small opening with a skeleton. Kill any crabs
on the ground and pick up the torch and the White Phosphorous Grenade that's
next to the skeleton.
Equip the torch to recieve some light for navigating through the caves.
Return to where you started, and this time, go east. Crawl on the ground
through the small passage, killing any snakes or rats in your way. You will
end up in another waterlogged passage.
Swim straight forward and climb on the platform. Walk to the end and collect
the battery. Head back once again to your starting point and go east again.
Return to the waterfall room and hug the west wall and enter through the small
tunnel. Climb to the top, collect the Cold Medicine and Serum, then crawl
through the passage on the east wall.
You will crawl down towards another room. Search the edges of the room to
find night vision goggles. These make navigating through these caverns a lot
easier, so equip it. Dive down and look for an underwater passage. Quickly
swim through it and get back to the surface before your stamina runs out. You
will be back to the waterlogged passage where you found the battery.
Once again, go back to the starting point and head east. This time, go
through the central passage in the middle of the large cavern. Go up through
the tunnel, and you will be back in the waterfall room, but on an upper
level. Go north and stay on the upper level. Proceed north to enter another
tunnel to your next area. (man, that's a lot of backtracking!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you enter, there will be two paths to take. Head right, through the
narrow passage. Crawl through, and collect the M37 and Mk22 ammo. There are a
bunch of crabs and frogs, so eat away. Crawl on, and collect the Snow
Camouflage. The tunnel will continue on, so when you're out of the tight
space, turn around. There will be some ammo scattered in the open area. Pick
it up, then turn back around and proceed north.
You will enter a sunlit cave, with water everywhere and an island in the
center. Snake will enter, and The Pain will make his entrance, attacking you
with hornets. He will land on the island in the center, and Snake jumps in
the water to avoid the hornets. IT'S ON!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The Pain
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Pain will take his place on the central island for the whole battle. You
should stay in the water for a large portion of the battle. The Pain likes to
talk to himself a lot in this battle, which actually makes it easier. For
example, if he says "Tommygun!", then stay under the water. The Pain will
pull out a Tommygun and start shooting you, even if you're under the water.
Swim halfway around the poll and he'll surely be done firing at you.
When he yells "Grenade!", he'll take out a grenade and use his hornet friends
to carry it to you. When The Pain does say this, hop onto the surrounding
rock structures and fire at The Pain with an AK-47 or M1911A1. He will just
stand there, waiting for the hornets to drop the grenade at you; he's pretty
much a sitting duck.
After you damage The Pain a bit, he will gather his hornets and make a shield
around him. You can take out the hornet shield with some M37 shots, grenades,
White Phosphorous Grenades, or Stun Grenades. Hop into the water and look for
ammo or food if needed.
Sometimes The Pain will ask himself where you are. If he can't find you, wait
underwater with your Water Camo on and he will walk around the edge of the
island and bend over. Equip the Thermal Goggles to see him better and pop in
some shots from underwater. Always look at your stamina while underwater. Your
health will decreasure if you run out of stamina.
The Pain also makes mirror images of himself. If you shoot the decoy, it will
give away your position and you'll be attacked. Equip the Thermal Goggles and
shoot the one with the body hit for a surefire way to hurt The Pain.
Once half of The Pain's health has been depleted, he will start shooting
hornets out of his mouth! These are bullet bees and as the name implies, they
should be treated like bullets. If you get hit by one, you have to use the
same cure treatment as a gunshot wound. Quickly swim around the island to
avoid these attacks.
Remember, ammo can be found underwater and on the surrounding rock structures.
There's also many fish to find, so there's plenty of food in this area. Once
you've deplete all of The Pain's health, the hornet-loving freak will be done
for. He explodes, letting you continue your way out of the cave.

Exit this area through the back end of the room.

Climb onto the concrete platforms and watch out for the cobalt blue

feet so it can bite and poison them.
Head into the weapons storeroom to find a plethora of supplies, including the

Cheap Bastards Tip
------------------
Hey, do you want to *NOT* fight a boss later in the game. Well, you
sharpshooters may have a chance to! You saw that creepy old guy in the
wheelchair featured in the cinema about two seconds ago, right? That's The
End, and you can kill him off early in the game, totally preventing this boss
fight from happening!
Once the cinema ends, equip the SVD and check out the dock. Snipe the lowly
fools on the dock, and look for a guard pushing The End in his wheelchair.
You gotta be very quick, so shoot the guy pushing the wheelchair. Proceed
shooting the wheelchair until it blows up, killing The End. There you go, you
cheap bastard, you just prevented a boss fight from ever happening! But I
must say, there will indeed be a surprise for you when you get to the point
in which you were supposed to fight The End.
Okay, that's the end of that. Let's rewind a bit. Once you start in the area,
snipe the guards on the dock. They're radio men, and they will call for
backup if you are seen or heard. There are about three, so when they are done
for, swim to the boats. They carry some ammo. Pick all of it up, then proceed
down the dock and into the warehouse. Not too hard, eh?

stuck the TNT. Shielded guards will come and run up the stairs towards you.
Press O when you have the TNT equipped to detonate it and blast the whole lot

Go back down the stairs and take out one or two guards. Head west to the
wall, then south down a corridor where you can find the Desert Face Paint. Go
back up north, and look up with your sniper rifle. Look up the flights of
stairs to a balcony high up. Snipe the guard on the balcony, then proceed up

Once you enter the area, another cinema will occur. A dart will come your
way, finding it's way into Snake's thigh. As he hobbles behind a tree, he's
bombarded by more arrows. A menacing laughter comes from the trees as a lanky
shape drops to the ground. It's the next member of the Cobra Unit: The Fear.
With his crossbow aimed, he's poised and ready to fight!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The Fear
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as the battle starts, cure yourself of the nasty arrow wound and the
poisoning. The Fear will turn invisible, leaping from tree to tree like a
crazed monkey. The only way to fight this goon is to use Thermal Goggles. Keep
them equipped at all times. Since The Fear maneuvers around the area with such
speed, he will always be able to see you. Heck, you can equip any camo you
want, and it won't help you in this battle.
As The Fear hops along the treetops, search for him in First-Person Mode and
blast him once he stops momentarily. It's hard to see or know when he's
attacking you with your Thermal Goggles on, because it's hard to see or hear
the arrows. You can listen for him when he pulls the arrow back, kind of how a
bow and arrow sounds like. Always open the cure menu to check if you have any
injuries. The traps from before are still in tact and they can hurt you.
Continue blasting at him with your AK-47 or XM16E1. After a bit of fighting,
The Fear will start complaining and searches for food. He'll sometimes shoot
food from the treetops, then hop onto the ground and eat it to regain stamina.
If you have any poisonous animals (living ones), throw them on the ground and
they might attack The Fear as he gathers food. Sometimes, he eats rotten food
and his stamina will go down and he will be stunned.
The Fear will also become uninvisible for a short time, so use that as an
opportunity to take him out and continue mauling him with some sort of
automatic weapon. You can also run up to him and blast him with your M37
shotgun. The Fear doesn't have many attacks or tactics other than shooting
you with arrows. The Fear will go down rather quickly; he's probably the
easiest of the Cobra Unit.
- SITHDUKE says:
What I do first is just to the left of your starting location is a tree with
two mushrooms and a 2nd tree with a third mushroom just left of that one.
These are idea to keep The Fear from collecting his own food and
regenerating his stamina. If you shoot/kick them from the tree's base he'll
automatically want your food instead of hunting his own. When The Fear
consumes them he'll be poisoned and you'll also have enough time to kick him
a few times while he's collecting the food. This is an ideal strategy if
you're going for a stamina kill.

This a fairly large area, and it's pretty hard to navigate through. If you
take the right path, it's much easier and you won't have to deal with as many
guards. It's one long narrow passage. Be very careful, because this dense
jungle makes the guards really hard to find. Put on the Thermal Goggles here
and there to check if any camouflaged guards are nearby. The Anti-Personnel
Sensor really helps here too. Crawl throught a lot of the area, as you can
easily hide in the tall grass and numerous tree trunks.
Equipping the Thermal Goggles and sniping guards far away defeats the caution
throughout some of the area. Cautiously take out guard by guard while
crawling in the tall grass with a well camouflaged outfit. When you get to a
large area, equip the Thermal Goggles. There will be a pitfall trap waiting
right in front of the ammo. Navigate around the pit and get the ammo. When
the road forks, take the right path.

Once you enter the wooded area, two guards will patrol the area. Quickly find
tall grass to crouch in and let the guards pass by. The second one kinda
slacks off and stays behind; he's the radioman. Take him out first, because
if not, he will signal for help.
CQC him, then if the second guard possibly hears or sees you, take him out
however you want. Since the radioman is dead, you can alert guards and they
won't call for backup. Go north and stop at the first right. Start going east
a little bit, but not all the way out into the clearing.
Check out the cabin; guards are stationed on the porch. Take out all of them
and go north again until you can go no further. Go left and slide down the
hill towards the small shack. Collect the food inside, and blow it up if
you'd like with the TNT. Go into the main cabin once the guards on the porch
are killed. Collect all of the items, ranging from weapons to ammo, and exit
the area. This time, take the north path in Svyatogornyj West.

Cheap Bastards Tip, Part 2
--------------------------
If you killed The End back in Ponizovje Warehouse: Exterior, you will have to
face a whopping 20 Ocelot guards! Have fun, you cheap bastard you. ^_~
If you decided to play fair and spare The End back at the warehouse, then you
will meet up with the old timer here in Sokrovenno South. The End, perched on
one of his many sniper posts, will wake up and begin talking to Snake. This is
the start of the very best boss battle in the game. Heck, it's one of the best
boss fights in a video game, hands down! This is the battle with The End.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The End
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, this is certainly one of the highpoints of the game. The battle with
The End isn't just a "he's there, you're here, shoot each other" battle: it's
a test of endurance. You must be patient in the battle with The End; don't be
surprised if this battle takes over an hour long, even on Normal Mode.
The fight takes place along three humongous areas; all part of a dense jungle:
Sokrovenno South, Sokrovenno West, and Sokrovenno North. As you may now
already, The End is a master sniper, so you guessed it: this is a sniping
battle.
The forest is VERY dense, and The End will be stationed at specific sniper
spots to fight you. You can vie those sniper spots on the map. Speaking of
the map, you must use the map constantly to win. The End actually shoots
tranquilizer darts which decrease your stamina rapidly if not cured.
A simple survival knife will fully cure you, but if your stamina runs out, The
End will capture you and throw you in jail all the way back at Graniny Gorki
Lab. All enemies will reappear normally, so you can't simply run back here.
Because of stamina being such a big importance in this battle, you will find
many different animals in the three areas, which respawn once killed. You can
even shoot and kill The End's pet parrot, which can be found in a tree near
the weapon supply shack in Sokrovenno South.
The Thermal Goggles are a hassle to use because there is so much animal and
plant life that actually sensing The End will be near impossible. He is also a
master of camouflage, so occasionally you will be shot at without even knowing
where he is.
Some pure giveaways is his weapon. The scope on his sniper rifle will reflect
sunlight, possibly giving away his location. If it starts raining, you know
that the old man has fallen asleep. Run around the areas to all the sniper
points, listening for any noises. He snores quite loudly, so if you hear
snores, look at the closest sniper points to possibly find him and get the
upper hand.
If The End ever says something, that means he's about to or already fired
upon you. Once the first of his shots have been fired, open up the map
immediately. His location will be revealed as a red circle. That should help
you find out where he is and target him. You have one of two options: snipe
him if you know his exact location or run towards his sniper point and attack
him close hand or hold him up.
To hold up The End, point your gun at him and Snake will tell him to freeze.
He will most likely refuse and run away. If you hold him up one more time at
another point, The End will give you his Moss Camouflage. If you want the
camo, you can also get it by depleting his stamina. This can be really easy,
since the old geezer loses stamina over time; going from point to point. Once
you think it's low enough, unload your Mk22 on him to take out his stamina
completely.
But beware, if The End's health or stamina is low, he will use the power of
the forest (yeah, sounds cheesy) to regain all of his health and stamina!
Prevent this by not letting him out of your sight. This can be a pain to do,
because The End is surprisingly quick. Look around on the ground. The End
leaves his footprints in the mud, so technically you can track him down
through the whole battle. It's tricky, but always try to stay on his tail.
Very rarely will you actually encounter The End running from sniper point to
sniper point. I'm glad to say that I did at one point in the fight. If you
ever end up being close to the guy or see him in the corner of your eye, wail
on him with shotgun bullets or snipe him if he is far away.
The End also throws stun grenades at you in a ground battle and runs away. If
he steps in the mud, you can track him down easier. Ammo will be scarce and
there's limited ammo in the weapons supply room. (I ended up having only one
SVD bullet left when the battle was over!)
This is the type of battle whether you either love or hate. Some of the more
inexperienced players may have a lot of trouble in this battle, where experts
may find themselves restarting the game just to replay the fight with The
End! And because I found this battle to be incredibly unique and innovative,
I have some users give me their tips, tricks, and their strategies for this
stunning battle.
- LuigiandYoshiFan says:
Wear the Mask, the scientist suit, torch, and any other ways of making
yourself visible. Then when you've got his attention check the map. It will
give you his location. When you go there however he will have moved. Either
snipe him with the SVD you found or run as fast as you can to his current
location then hunt him down via thermal gogs. After that you wanna whipe out
your favorite weapon (in terms of accuracy and damage) this way you don't
have to worry about hunting blindly and several times.
- cheatachu72 says:
Spin around in circles until The End shoots at you. Get down, get to where
he is, hold him up, get moss camo, get three headshots, turn away while he
throws a flashbang, follow footprints with thermal goggles, rinse and
repeat. The Fake Death Pill works once by letting him come to you and
getting a free hit for you. I went into the weapons shack using the FDP 3
times and it screwed up his lines. Five minutes later he said, "Think I
can't tell the difference between a Fake Death and a real one?"
- VictimToDie4 says:
My way of taking down the end was to use the Directional Microphone to find
out what general direction he's in then go towards him using the crawl
stalk. Then reapeat the Directional Microphone part again to pinpoint even
closer. When you do find him get right up behind him and wait. I usually go
for the stamina kill so i wait untill his stamina goes down to the point
where he regains him stamina. Then i shoot him. After that i just keep
finding him and just take him out. Not the quickest way but works for me.
- GinsuKnight says:
When it rains, it seems that his stamina goes down all on its own, and
sometimes makes him fall asleep. I was in the river map (west area) and saw
Z's floating up from him almost all the way across the map. I just ran the
long way around and held him up before he awoke. Worked well... course, he
snuck up on ME about 5 minutes later and i got thrown in the pokey. Oh, and
dont forget that using a big/loud gun (M63 comes to mind) to hold him up
works well too. He refused to give up the camo, so I shot around his head a
dozen times, and he gave it up on the spot.
- Graeme777 says:
Always shoot him 3 times. And learn the map. Some places are better than
others which The End will use more often. Also, watch out for the light
reflecting off his scope. Sometimes it can be a full blown lens flare
effect, other times just a flash.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a lot of time and patience, The End will meet his end. The mission will
also come to an end, where Mission 7 starts up after you reach the exit,
which is found in the northeast corner of Sokrovenno North.

As soon as you enter the area, switch to Choco Chip camo and Desert Face
Paint. You may need it for a while, so use it now to be safe. Get the itmes
in the corner, then go west and slide down the hill. Kill the cobra that's in
front of you; watch out for it's bite. When you come upon the large cliffside
area, take a couple steps out in the open.
Equip your SVD and look on the right wall. There should be a soldier standing
on the high ledge. Snipe him first; he has an RPG-7: a very powerful rocket
launcher. Once you snipe him, slowly proceed north. Guards are pacing the
area in low trenches. Once you are out of their sight, go in the trench and
CQC them. There are only about two or three of them, but if they call backup,
many more guards come.
If they do call for backup, run to the large boulder on the western side of
the cliffside. There's some crawl space to hide in. You can chuck grenades at
a group of guards' feet to take them all out in one blow. You might want to
stay low, because the reinforcements have RPG-7s.
Once everyone's gone, collect the goods by shaking the bodies. Vultures will
be feasting on the dead bodies, so if you're low on food, these guys are
sitting ducks. Take them out as well, and collect more supplies scattered
around the area before you proceed to the second mountainous area.

This is an extremely hard area if you won't sneak by and just kill everyone
in sight. If you destroyed the helicopter back in Bolshaya Past Base with the
TNT, then hovercraft guards patrol the area. Usually one patrols the area and
the rest are used for backup if needed. Equip the SVD when you enter and aim
to the left a bit. If you look up the pathway, there should be a guard
patrolling right where you would walk up next. Snipe him, then go north and
walk up the said pathway.
There is a cave found here that's pretty good for hiding. Enter through the
doorway to find some items and a cobra. Avoid it's bite and kill/tranq it.
There is also a crawlspace that leads to the side of the mountain, which is
also a good escape route. DO NOT KILL THE HOVERCRAFT GUARD.
If you do, people will radio for backup, and a seemingly endless wave of
hovercraft guards and normal guards will come to take you out. It's not worth
it. Just avoid him, as you sneak up the pathway. Once you exit the cave and
go east up the other path, duck behind the rock. If there are any guards,
your best strategy is to tranq them and kill them with your knife or silenced
pistol.
You will reach a turret. There really is no need to use it, because if the
hovercraft guards hears you, then you're pretty much done. Same with the
helicopter; if you take it out, another one will come. Just ignore it and
proceed north, towards the three bunkers.
Make sure the hovercraft is far away before you snipe the patrolling guards
up near the bunkers. Check all of the bunkers for a plethora of items and
weapons, including the RPG-7. There is one more guard, well, guarding the
exit. Take him out by any means. If he alerts anyone, you can easily escape
in time before any other guard sees you. Exit the area by proceeding north.

There's alway a helicopter patrolling the area here, no matter what. It can
be handy if you "use" it correctly. If you want to snipe enemies or run, make
sure to do it when the helicopter is above you, so the helicopter drowns out
any sound you make. This proves essential for sniping guards here.
First off, there is a lone guard walking down towards you when you enter the
area. Hide behind the crates at the start, then CQC him. Snipe any visible
guards who are looking off cliffsides or ledges. Once again, make sure you
snipe them when the helicopter if overhead.
To be safe, travel through the trenches to reach the shacks in this area.
There are mounted turrets, but DO NOT SHOOT DOWN THE HELICOPTER! The alert
meter will come up, and the helicopter will strike back, using machine gun
fire and a barrage of missiles to take you down.
Helicopters will probably kill you, and even if you do destroy it, another one
will arrive to take its place. It's a lose-lose situation for you, so just
avoid the thought at all costs. With that said, there really isn't much use of
the turrets, unless you have a good eye and decide to save SVD ammo and take
out the guards that way.
The shack to the right has some ammo and grenades. Proceed through the
trenches. Most of the guards stay up on the land, so in certain parts you can
jump out and get them. It's better to just avoid them. You should reach
another shack on your way to the northern side of the area. This place has a
lot more ammo, TNT, and Claymores.
Leave, and head west through the trenches. The top shack has a bunch of
medical supplies, including bandages, suture kits, and ointment. Head est
from the medical shack through the other trench. Keep going east, then go
south with the trenches. The winding path ends up going north again, where
there will be a doorway. Open the door and go inside to have another cutscene
with Eva.

Flamethrower guards, yay! You heard me, now guards with flamethrowers have
been positioned on the mountaintop. No worries, you won't be here for long.
Go south from the cabin through the trenches. When the trench goes west, keep

take him out the quiet, sneaky way, or you can shoot the fuel tank on his

Choose either way you want. After taking him out, go up the ledge on the

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The Fury
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Fury will fly right over your head once the battle starts. Run to the
north and get on the ledge. You will be fighting this battle in six long
corridors. They are very dark, so Thermal Goggles are important here. Pace
the ledge, looking down each corridor for The Fury. Make sure you have your
Thermal Goggles on to help you spot his black suit in the darkness. When you
find him, equip your SVD and shoot him about three times. He will fall to the
ground and curse/shout.
Run to the other side quickly, because when he gets up, he'll charge to where
the gunshot was emitted and blast the area with his flamethrower. Never fight
The Fury close up unless you're good with the knife. You can actually slice
open his suit, stunning him and making him get hurt by the flames. The Fury
is surprisingly, quick, too. If you ever find him behind you, dive roll into
him to knock him down, then get the heck away from him.
Run down one of the corridors and just try to make things hard for the guy.
Try to stay away from the south side of the area, because there is a pit
which makes things a lot easier for The Fury. He can easily charge into you
and watch as you go careening down into the pit. After you hit him a good
five to six times, he'll get really angry.
The Fury won't pace the corridors anymore, he will use his jetpack to fly
around each of them, giving you barely any time to snipe him. If The Fury
ever gets you with his flamethrower, dive to get the flames off of you and
cure yourself with Ointment and a Bandage. If at any point in the battle The
Fury seems are away, he'll engage a countdown. When he gets to zero, he will
activate his jetpack and use himself as a battering ram, crashing right into
you. When you hear him count, run inbetween the corridors.
There are also a lot of barrels in the area, so use them to your advantage.
If you'd like to save bullets, shoot a barrel that's close to The Fury. The
explosive barrels damage the guy more than your guns. When you deplete at
least three-quarters of his health, The Fury's patterns are nearly
unpredictable. Once he finds you, he'll usually point that out to you by
saying something like, "There you are!". So if you hear that, dive roll into
him or run away.
Since he travels so fast now, close combat is basically all you can do now.
Either way, sniping is out of the picture. Right when he gets up after a dive
roll, pump him with your shotgun before he can whip out his flamethrower. If
The Fury says that his suit is ripped, then he will be momentarily stunned.
Lash out on him at this point and try to hide right after a successful
attack. The Fury will be smoked in no time. (Haha, I made a funny.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With that battle done, there's no more Cobras left (other than The Boss, of
course). After the sweet cinema though, the tunnel is sealed off, so no
backtracking for you! Proceed forward, collecting the medical supplies, and
now you can finally get out of this dang tunnel!

Salute to them and they will let you pass into Sokolov's chamber. Entering

In the cinema, make sure to hold L2 and/or R2 so Snake doesn't take damage
from Volgin. After the cinema, Snake is trapped in a prison cell with a guard
keeping a close eye on him. You actually have a number of ways to escape:
OPTION 1: In the previous cutscene, if you pressed R1 at the desired time,
you saw The Sorrow holding up a sign with a radio signal on it.
That radio signal is 144.75. Use it to open the cell door. The
guard, confused, rushes in. You can now proceed to fork him to
death (I've always wanted to say that).
OPTION 2: Use a Fake Death Pill to "die". The guard will open the cell door
and inspect Snake. use the Revival Pill to wake up, then kill the
guard with your fork or bare hands.
OPTION 3: The guard will throw food into Snake's cell. Like the hardass
that you are, simply throw back the food at him. He will eat the
food instead. Occasionally, the food is rotten, and the sentry will
hurry off to the little guard's room. Dial in the radio frequency,
and go to the bathroom and take out the guard by surprise. I don't
recommend this option, because the food isn't always rotten.
OPTION 4: This is just like Option 3, well, kinda. Proceed to throw back
the guard gives to you. If the food isn't rotten, he will consume
three or four of them. A funny cutscene will start, with the guard
talking about his family. He holds up a picture of his family. When
the R1 icon comes up, press it to look at the back of the card to
see the radio frequency: 144.75. He will also give you Cigar Gas
Spray. Why? I don't know. When the scene ends, stand as close to
the bars as you can and use the gas on the sentry. He will fall
asleep, and you can open the door and fork him to death.
OPTION 5: This one is incredibly simple, but lame and boring. Crawl under
the bed and hide there for a bit. The idiotic guard will wonder
where you went and will panic. He will open the door and go inside
to look for you. Crawl out from under the bed and kill him with
your trusty fork.
OPTION 6: Another painfully easy one, yet quite funny. You may have realized
that Snake can throw up. To do so, open the cure menu and rotate
the right analog to make Snake spin. Do this for about a minute and
exit the screen. When you control Snake again, walk around a little
bit and he should throw up. If you happen to do this while the
guard is looking, he'll ask if you're alright and say something
like, "Ew, did you just throw up?". The guard will enter the cell,
where you can proceed to catch him by surprise and fork him.
Leave the facility by going through the room right next to your cell, exiting
through the southern door, and going through the second door on the left. Now
you'll be back in Groznyj Grad Southeast. All the enemies will reappear, but
hurry through the areas instead of taking them out. Don't even bother
tranquing them.
Go through the north door, then go through the east door when in the
northeast section. You will end up in the northwest section. Go near the
truck where you went inside to get to the weapons lab. Instead, hug the left
wall and go through the small opening. Crawl under the pipes and open the
trap door on the ground north from where you entered: this leads to the
sewers.

Head down the stairs, collecting ammo and items as you go. On the floor, go
north through the sewage and muck. When you reach a dead end, crawl through
the space on the left side. There will probably be guard dogs on each end, so
whip out your SAA to take them out. The right side contains some SAA Bullets.
Once at the end of the corridor, crawl through the space on the right wall.
You will be in a section with a lot more water, enabling you to swim and dive
in it. Collect the styptic and food on the bottom floor under the water. You
will have to go under another crawl space on the left, so walk through until
more bars block your path, like the other passage.
Crawl through the hole on the right and continue going east. Watch out for
the guard dogs here; take them out with your gun. Go north towards the light,
and another cinema will be triggered. Snake is cornered by Ocelot and some
guards. In front of Snake are the bad guys, and behind Snake is a waterfall.
He jumps off of the waterfall to avoid Ocelot and swims down a river. Snake
meets a strange foe, whom you might have seen several times before in the
game. He's The Sorrow, and he is one strange foe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The Sorrow
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This really isn't a boss fight, but since there is a boss meter, I guess
it's an exception. The funny thing is that the boss meter is empty at the
start of the battle! That's because The Sorrow is a ghost, and everyone knows
that you can't kill someone that's already dead. The Sorrow will resurrect
EVERY SINGLE ENEMY YOU HAVE KILLED. That means if you're a stealth master and
haven't killed many guards, then this fight will be boring. If you're like me
and probably killed everyone so far, then this might take a while.
As you tread upstream, ghosts of the dead enemies will be coming toward you.
Some will merely walk past you, ignoring you completely. Most of them though
will try to get their revenge and take out Snake. If Snake touches a ghost,
then his life meter will start to get drained. Ghosts are slow, so they are
pretty easy to maneuver around.
The Sorrow shoots out strange beams of energy at you. Technically, they don't
hurt you, but it will knock Snake down if he's hit. If you get knocked down
with a ground of ghosts around you, you'll be hurting. The beam is incredibly
slow when shot, so you should have no trouble moving to the other side of the
river to dodge it.
You can shoot the ghosts to momentarily stun them as they emit an ear-
piercing scream. That proves to be very useful when a wall of ghosts is
moving towards you. You will also come across the bosses as you make your way
through. They aren't any different from the normal ghosts; just shoot them
and proceed.
At the end of the river, you will come across The Sorrow's corpse. After a
couple of seconds, Snake will drop dead. Don't press continue though, open
your item screen and use a Revival Pill. It is just a lame trick by The
Sorrow. If you press continue, then you will have to start the fight over
again. After you use the Revival Pill, the "battle" ends. You get the Spirit
Camouflage for beating this ghastly Cobra member.

Head west down the long corridor. Go north and enter the hallway where those
two guards were; right before Sokolov's chamber. Pick up the Life Medicine
and suppressors, then go back to the long corridor. Remeber that door that I
told you to remember? Use Key C on it to unlock it and enter the Shagohod's
hangar. You must plant four pieces of C3 on the four fuel tanks.
There are two on both sides of the Shagohod. So, there's one to the northwest,
northeast, southwest, and southeast. Once again, avoid all maintenance
members, because they are like scientists; they squeal. There are normal
guards here, so don't act suspicious, like dive roll or bump into them.
Go down the stairs and avoid the lone maintenance guy. Go to the west to the
staircase and go up it. There is another staircase that leads up to a rafter.
Walk past it, then put the C3 on the fuel tank right next to the stairs. Do
down the next flight of stairs to your right towards the trucks.
Go north and plant the C3 on the second fuel tank. Crawl under the trucsk to
find Instant Noodles and another Life Medicine. Go east, and you should run
into the third fuel tank, which is behind a wall. Go around the wall and plant
C3 on it, then go south up the ramp.
The last fuel tank is more south, so continue until you see it, and plant the
last C3 piece on it. Volgin will spot you, where The Boss and Ocelot tag
along with him. They have captured Tatyana, who is really the spy. (if you
haven't figured it out, she is Eva).
Volgin will challenge Snake to a one-on-one match, not knowing that the C3 is
planted. If you press R1 at the desired time, you can see The Sorrow holding
up a sign telling you how much more time there is until the C3 blows. Volgin
lowers the platforms where the two of you are standing, and Ocelot watches
from above.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: Volgin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an incredibly easy battle, despite Volgin acting like a total badass
throughout the whole game. Ocelot will actually give you ammo through the
battle. There is a five minute time limit, but you should have more than
enough time to finish him. Take off the Maintenance camo and switch to
Sneaking. Equip any gun, and this will tempt Volgin to shoot an electric
blast at you.
If he hits you with your gun equipped, the gun will go off, wasting precious
ammo and hurting you. Unequip it right before he's going to shoot, then run
behind him. When the beam stops, unload your M37 shotgun on his back. You can
only hurt his back, for he uses a shield to protect the front of his body.
Repeat this simple process until you take out half of his health.
Now Volgin will use different electric attacks. He will fire a rapid stream
of electricity at you. You can run from side to side to dodge it, then get
behind him and blast his back. He'll use another electric attack: when he
clasps his hands together and fires a beam. A very good method is to shoot
the pipes above Volgin. Water will come gushing out on top of him. This hurts
him and gives you an opportunity to strike as well.
To make things easier, use Russian Glowcaps and Chaff Grenades to divert his
electric attacks. Volgin will sometimes go to a circuit box and "recharge".
Since he has his back facing you, blast him when he is getting his energy
back. With Ocelot constantly helping you and the simplicity of this fight, you
should not have a problem. If you deplete Volgin's stamina, the Cold War
Camouflage is yours.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, now it's time for one of the coolest parts in the game. Snake escapes the
pit, and the C3 goes off, with Snake still inside the hangar! The building is
being destroyed, with guards scrambling for their lives. Snake finds an exit,
so he rushes out into the open.
Eva comes over with her motorcycle, and Snake jumps on. They start to speed
away, but wait. What's that?! The Shagohod with Volgin at it's controls comes
crashing through the hangar, still in one piece. The Shagohod wheels towards
the motorcycle, so Eva and Snake bolt out of it's reach!

Equip the RPG-7 for this area. Guards in motorcycles will start chasing you.
Aim for the front of their vehicles with your rockets, so when the rocket
gets to their motorcycle, they will hit it dead on. You will have to use a
tactical reload to stay alive in this game. Press R2 twice once you shoot a
rocket to automatically reload one. It's a LOT faster and easier. Take out
all of the motorcycles, starting with the closest ones.
If a motorcycle is too close to you, try to aim for the back of the vehicle
so you don't damage yourself in the blast. You can even use an M63 to shoot
the riders. The Shagohod will catch up to you, so shoot it's treads to slow
it down. When the mechanical monster shoots missiles, take them out of the
sky with your M63 or toss a Chaff Grenade to mess up their flight pattern.
You will come to the rail bridge after pummeling the treads for a bit.

think! It uses rocket boosters to speed up the falling bridge, over Snake and
Eva, and lands behind them. It's ready to fight!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: Shagohod
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The battle against the Shagohod is simple. You must do to it what you did on
the runway: shoot the treads. Use a tactical reload (double tap R2) and your
RPG-7 to shoot the treads. When sparks fly and Volgin complains that it's too
slow, Eva will drive to the back of the giant tank.
Aim for the upper portion of the Shagohod and shoot the damaged part where
the electricity is coming out of. You can possibly get two or three shots in.
The Shagohod will turn around afterwards. When it fires missiles like before,
shoot them out of the air or use a Chaff Grenade. Repeat the process of
shooting the treads, then the back to defeat this very easy boss.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: Volgin
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This time you will be on foot when you fight Volgin inside the Shagohod. At
first, Volgin will begin chasing Eva. Go to the edge of the area and hop in a
turret. Start blasting Volgin (he's on top of the Shagohod) and he will turn
to face you. Jump off of the turret, because he will come speeding at you and
he will run over the turret.
Volgin will then fire machine guns at at you. Run away from them by going
south. They should not even reach you. Volgin also fires a steady stream of
bullets from the center of the tank. Run from side to side to dodge it. He
will also fire missiles at you. Like before, use the M63 or Chaff Grenades to
make short work of them.
After a while of running and dodging, Volgin will forget about you and start
chasing Eva. Once again, hop in a turret and blast away until he destroys it.
Repeat the process like before, but make sure to keep your distance. If you
get too close to the Shagohod, he will actually run you over!
But there is a small space between the center of the vehicle and the treads
that you can go through unharmed. You can whip out your sniper rifle and
proceed to shoot at the back of Volgin's head before he gets a chance to turn
around. Repeat this simple process to bring down the big man once and for all.
- Alternate Battle Strategy:
I found a much easier way to defeat Volgin; so easy that you shouldn't get
hurt at all. First, start off with equipping your SVD or Mosin Nagant. Shoot
Volgin in the back of the head when he chases EVA. He will give his
attention to you. Now, run right up to the front of the Shagohod. He will
probably say something like, "I'll grind you into dust!".
With that said, Volgin will attempt to run you over with the Shagohod. Get
on your knees when he tries to run you over, get up, turn around, and snipe
him in the head with either sniper rifle. If you are quick enough, you can
do it, but he does turn around pretty quickly. So, if you're really good
with sniping, you can take down Volgin without a scratch on you.

With the death of Volgin (finally), Mission 9 ends as well. Only one more

on the battlefield. She shows Snake her scar, which looks just like a Snake
(what a coincidence). The Boss tells Snake that if he can't beat her and
escape in ten minutes, this whole place will be bombed to hell. She tosses
off her coat and prepares for one final battle!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BOSS: The Boss
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here it is: the battle of the century. This is where it all comes down The
Boss is very fast and tends to use CQC instead of guns most of the time. When
the battle starts, equip the Snow Camo and Snow Face Paint. The Boss will run
at you and use her own CQC. Rapidly press Circle to try to counter, but you
probably won't. She's cheap like that. She will end up throwing you to the
ground. Jump back up and try to punch and kick her. If you knock her to the
ground, run away from her and dive into the white flowers.
Use the log in the center of the area as a landmark to where everything is.
Get into the crouching position and look around for The Boss with your SVD.
With the Snow camo and face paint on, you're nearly invisible. If The Boss
does manage to see you, unequip your SVD and equip a weapon that you most
likely won't use. She will grab your gun and scatter all the pieces: the gun,
the ammo, etc. With a useless gun out of the way, you can add something more
useful to your arsenal.
Look for flower petals being kicked up in the air to spot The Boss's quick
movements. She will probably hide behind a tree and come out with her gun
aimed. Once you spot her, zoom in and when she is aiming her gun, shoot her
in the chest. Shooting her in the head deals a bit more damage, but chances
are that you might miss. Shoot her in the chest two or three times to knock
her down, then run away from your current position. Repeat this process of
shooting her and running to a new area.
The time limit is the hardest part of this battle. This "cat and mouse"
strategy is good, but it will probably waste some time. When the music
starts, that means that five minutes is up and you only have another five
minutes to take her out. Another good strategy is to plant TNT on the trees.
Since The Boss always hides behind trees at one point or another, detonate
them when she's behind a tree to get her caught in an explosion, greatly
hurting her.
If you take her out with the MK22 and deplete her stamina, you'll have you
will have the Snake Camouflage to use in the next playthrough. There are
three rare snakes to find in this area, Snake Liquid, Snake Solid, and Snake
Solidus. If you happen to eat one, all of your stamina is refilled instantly!
This is an extremely fun battle, but it's also extremely hard. Pat yourself
on the back once she's done, because you just beat the final boss of the game!
