Sony Playstation 3
The PlayStation 3 is the third home video game console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, and the successor to the PlayStation 2 as part of the PlayStation series. The PlayStation 3 is competing with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.
A major feature that distinguishes the PlayStation 3 from its predecessors is its unified online gaming service, the PlayStation Network, which contrasts with Sony's former policy of relying on game developers for online play. Other major features of the console include its robust multimedia capabilities, connectivity with the PlayStation Portable, and its use of a high-definition optical disc format, Blu-ray Disc, as its primary storage medium. The PS3 was also the first Blu-ray 2.0-compliant Blu-ray player on the market.
The PlayStation 3 was first released on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America, and March 23, 2007 in Europe and Oceania. Two SKUs were available at launch: a basic model with a 20 GB hard drive (HDD), and a premium model with a 60 GB hard drive and several additional features (the 20 GB model was not released in Europe or Oceania). Since then, several revisions have been made to the console's available models.
The PlayStation 3 is convex on its left side when vertical (the top side is convex when horizontal), and has a glossy black finish with the PlayStation logo on the left side. Playstation designer Teiyu Goto stated that the Spider-Man font-inspired logo "was one of the first elements [SCEI president Ken Kutaragi] decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3."
Numerous accessories for the console have been developed including the wireless Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers, the BD Remote, the PlayStation Eye camera and the PlayTV DVB-T tuner/digital video recorder accessory.
At its press conference at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced the DualShock 3 (trademarked DUALSHOCK 3), a PlayStation 3 controller with the same function and design as the Sixaxis, but with vibration capability included. Hands-on accounts describe the controller as being noticeably heavier than the standard Sixaxis controller, and capable of vibration forces comparable to the DualShock 2. It was released in Japan on November 11, 2007, in North America on April 15, 2008, in Australia on April 24, 2008, in New Zealand on May 9, 2008, in Europe on July 2, 2008, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on July 4, 2008.
The PlayStation 3 features a slot-loading 2x speed Blu-ray Disc drive for games, Blu-ray movies, DVDs, CDs, and other optical media. It was originally available with hard drives of 20 and 60 GB (only the 60 GB model was available in PAL regions).[ An 80 GB model has since been introduced in NTSC regions, and a 40 GB model has been introduced in all regions. All PS3 models have user-upgradeable 2.5" SATA hard drives.
The PlayStation 3 uses the IBM-designed Cell microprocessor as its CPU, utilizing seven of the eight "synergistic processing elements" (often shortened to SPE). The eighth SPE is disabled to improve chip yields (i.e. chips do not have to be discarded if one of the SPEs is defective). Only six of the seven SPEs are accessible to developers as one is reserved by the OS. Graphics processing is handled by the NVIDIA RSX 'Reality Synthesizer', which can output resolutions from 480i/576i SD up to 1080p HD. The PlayStation 3 has 256 MB of XDR main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory for the RSX.
In response to Microsoft's success with their Xbox Live network, Sony announced a unified online service for the PlayStation 3 system at the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing meeting in Tokyo. Sony also confirmed that the service will always be connected, free, and include multiplayer support. In addition, the registration interface can only be accessed through the PS3 or PSP system interfaces.
The PlayStation 3 received generally unfavorable reviews soon after its launch, with many websites and reviewers criticizing its high price and lack of quality launch games. However, after a series of price revisions, Blu-ray's victory over HD DVD, and the release of several well received titles, such as Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the system has begun to receive better reviews.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Database
The Metal Gear Solid 4 Database is a downloadable application for the PlayStation 3. It takes the form of an encyclopedia, and catalogues every piece of Metal Gear in-game lore from all seven canonical entries in the series: Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
A user can choose how to navigate the database: either alphabetically or by category. In the case of category, the entries in the encyclopedia can be accessed from an alphabetical list, a timeline of the series' in-game universe or a relationship tree (exclusively showing characters and affiliated groups). Articles will contain highlighted word which link to related articles, and the application keeps track of all articles viewed.
The database was released on June 19, 2008 on the PlayStation Store in North America and Japan. It was released on the European store one week later.
The database was the source of much fan controversy when it was first released, as it contained references to several events in the Metal Gear universe (such as confirming that the Snatcher Project was not merely a rumor), and even retconned certain events itself (such as mentioning that Raiden's memories from his time fighting in wars as a child were erased by Solidus Snake).
By default, the database locks all references to Metal Gear Solid 4 to safeguard against spoilers. In order to unlock this hidden information, the player must have a completed MGS4 save file (and player data file, to ensure the save file was not downloaded). Even when fully unlocked it still contains minor gaps and never fully explains everything.
Metal Gear Saga Volume 2
The second volume was originally released in Japan in 2007 (where it was simply titled Metal Gear Saga) as a bonus to customers who purchased the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Box Set. In North American and England, an English version of the documentary was released as a bonus to customers who pre-ordered Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots.
The documentary narrates the fictional events of the Metal Gear storyline beginning with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and up to the events leading to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The documentary centers around an undisclosed narrator (voiced by Masane Tsukuyama in Japanese and Guy Perryman in English) attempting to track Solid Snake and narrates the history surrounding him, his father Big Boss and his brothers Liquid and Solidus.
The disc contains all the preview trailers of Metal Gear Solid 4 released up to that point as a bonus.
Chapter 001 Prologue
Chapter 002 Metal Gear 20th Anniversary
Chapter 003 Big Boss - The Origin of Snake
Chapter 004 Liquid Snake - The Second Snake
Chapter 005 Solidus Snake - The Third Snake
Chapter 006 Solid Snake - The First Snake
MGS4 Little Big Planet
Developers of the game LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule, released an expansion pack based on Metal Gear Solid 4 on December 23, 2008. It includes character skins for Old Snake, Raiden, Meryl, and Screaming Mantis, as well as a Metal Gear-themed set of levels.
The pack comes with 5 new levels a few new challenge rooms and tons of new stickers and objects and the Paintonator (Paint of the Patriots) paint gun. This gun adds a new style of gameplay all together for LBP.
MGS Touch
Metal Gear Solid Touch is a third-person shooter video game for iPhone and iPod Touch developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami worldwide. Announced on December 16, 2008, Metal Gear Solid Touch is based on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It was released on the App Store for select regions on March 18, 2009. Version 2.0.0, featuring an additional 8 stages and being self declared as the Complete Version, was released on April 22, 2009. It was updated again to version 2.1.0, which added 15 new wallpapers to Drebin's Shop.
The player plays through several missions based on stages from Metal Gear Solid 4, each introduced by brief text summarising the story so far. The player moves their finger across the screen to aim, tapping to fire, and moving their fingers together or apart to zoom in or out with a sniper rifle, removing their fingers from the screen to get behind cover and avoid enemy fire. Gako and Kerotan statues can be shot to gain health and weaponry such as rocket launchers.
The main objective of most missions is to kill a set number of enemies. Enemies include hostile PMC soldiers, Haven Troopers and Gekkos. There are also friendly targets which the player is penalised for shooting at. Some sections contain 'Boss fights', where the player fights a boss from the Metal Gear Solid 4 storyline; e.g. Laughing Octopus.
At the end of each mission, the player is awarded a rank based on their performance, similar to other Metal Gear Solid games. Higher ranks award more Drebin Points, which can be used to buy rewards such as iPhone character wallpapers.
The updated "complete" version (2.0.0) of MGST was released on April 22, 2009. This update adds eight more levels and covers the story from the arrival to Shadow Moses Island to the final showdown with Liquid Ocelot. Among the eight levels, four are boss battles.
Metal Gear Online
Metal Gear Online abbreviated MGO, is a PlayStation 3 exclusive online multiplayer spin-off of the Metal Gear series produced by Konami. Τhe "startup pack" of MGO is bundled with regional versions of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but also received a standalone release in Japan on July 17 2008. The name Metal Gear Online is common with previous online components for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.
As of November 4, 2008, Metal Gear Online has surpassed 1,000,000 members. To commemorate this occasion, Konami has issued a bonus of 10,000 reward points to all characters who logged in from November 25th to December 9th.
MGO premises up to 16-player online tactical warfare. Each player creates a character by irrevocably selecting a name, sex, race and voice. Further characters need to be purchased separately.
A character's prowess in the field is denoted by three main characteristics: grade, level and "animal rank". A character's grade ranges from A+ to ROOKIE, based on his performance in Survival and Tournament modes. A character's level ranges from 0 to 24 and fluctuates based on the score difference to other players at the end of a round, following a proprietary rating system. Animal ranks are emblems, awarded based on relevant statistics. For instance, frequently injecting enemies with the Scanning Plug (colloquially known as 'stinging') will lead to the Bee rank, while using ENVG (Enhanced Night Vision Goggles) for a specific share of overall play time grants the Owl rank. Each character can only be assigned one active rank, and an inner rank hierarchy prioritizes them. Once a rank is achieved, it remains in the character's rank history.
Characters can enhance their abilities by equipping skills. These range from the commonplace, like Assault Rifle+ that decreases reload time and recoil, to more complex, like Mοnomania which essentially turns bullets into tracking devices. Skills level up when pertinent actions are performed by, or at, the character. Out of a maximum of 4 available skill slots, each skill occupies at least 1 slot, while higher levels of a skill or special skills can occupy up to 3. This warrants balance between the level and number of chosen skills.
Rules of play
MGO provides several gameplay rules, fitting to both team based and solitary fighting styles.
Deathmatch pits players against each other. The winner is determined by most enemy kills when the ever decreasing kill counter or time reach zero. The player with the highest score is visible to others through SOP.
Stealth Deathmatch also pits players against each other, geared with stealth camo. A three level alarm informs players of enemy proximity. Eventually, the game area begins to constrict, leaving all outside it to suffer damage. There is no respawning, so the battle continues until one player is left alive, or until time runs out.
Team Deathmatch groups players into two teams, with each death decreasing the team's remaining tickets. The team to first deplete the other's tickets, or with more tickets when time runs out is the winner.
Capture Mission has teams racing to capture and hold within their goal area assigned targets, KEROTAN and GA-KO, for a cumulative period of 30 seconds. With both items in one team's goal area, the timer runs twice as fast, whereas if they are divided among goal areas, the timer is reset for both teams.
Rescue Mission premises the attacking team acquire GA-KO and place it in their goal area, while the other team defends. As there is no respawing in this mode, a team also wins by killing all the enemy team's members.
Base Mission is structured around capturing and defending small areas scattered across the map. A team wins by seizing all bases, or by having captured more bases than the enemy team when time runs out.
Team Sneaking demands from the sneaking team, equipped with stealth camo, to bring either KEROTAN or GA-KO to their goal area, while the other team defends the items. Another win condition is to kill, stun, and (only for the attacking team) hold up all enemy team members. Whenever a stealth soldier is discovered, all stealth camo is temporarily rendered non operational.
Sneaking Mission features two opposing teams, Snake, and with at least 12 participants, Metal Gear Mk II. Snake wins by collecting, through body searches, three dogtags, with each life lost resetting the count to zero. Teams claim victory by killing Snake a set amount of times, or by having scored more opposing team kills when time runs out.
Interval allows players to engage in battle with no repercussion to their statistics or skill leveling. A time bomb can be collected and passed around players to liven up the pace.
Metal Gear Online is region locked, meaning that players must be in the same video game publication territory to play together. As a result, players in Australia can only play against other Australians and European players, possibly resulting in lag. To overcome such issues, it's common practice to title matches according to the country of desired participants.

Users and Critics about MGS4
Reception:
According to Enterbrain, MGS4 sold 476,334 copies in its first four days on sale in Japan, which includes copies bundled with the PlayStation 3, and caused a boost in PlayStation 3 sales. The PS3, which usually sells nearly 10,000 units in a given week, went on to sell 77,208 units in MGS4's debut week. As of July 9, 2008, the game has sold 576,437 copies in Japan. According to Chart-Track, the game is the second fastest-selling PlayStation 3 title in the United Kingdom after Grand Theft Auto IV and was below Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty's opening weekend figure by 14,000 copies recorded in 2002; the sales of the PlayStation 3 increased by a "minimal" seven percent over MGS4's opening weekend. Konami has reported that MGS4 sold over one million copies across Europe in its first week, with 25,000 limited-edition copies "snapped up almost immediately". In the United States, MGS4 was the best-selling game in June 2008 selling 774,600 copies (nearly one million if the number of copies bundled with the PS3 were included), causing PS3 sales to double over the previous month, according to the NPD Group. As of June 30, 2008, the game has shipped over 3 million copies worldwide. Many stores had game players lined up around the block at midnight and the excitement was covered by a variety of news outlets. Konami reported that the Metal Gear series had sold 4.33 million units from July 1 to September 30, 2008.
Ratings and Criticism:
Metal Gear Solid 4 has received high critical acclaim, with a 94% aggregate rating at Metacritic and a 93% aggregate rating on MobyGames. The first review was a 10/10 from PlayStation Official Magazine (UK), commenting "[MGS4] shifts gears constantly, innovating again and again". The game has been awarded 10/10 from Game Informer and a 5/5 in all categories (graphics, control, sound, and fun factor) from GamePro. The game also received perfect scores from PlayStation: The Official Magazine (5/5), Japanese magazine Famitsu (40/40) and Empire. The game received a 9.9/10 from IGN UK, a 9.5/10 from IGN AU, and a 10/10 from IGN. IGN was quoted in a video review, saying MGS4 is "one of the best games ever made". Edge and Eurogamer both gave the game 8/10. GameSpot gave it a 10/10 saying "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most technically stunning video game ever made."
Reviewers were unanimous in approval of the way the title continues and concludes the series. Eurogamer stated that "You could not ask for a funnier, cleverer, more ambitious or inspired or over-the-top conclusion", and IGN AU found that the result "refines the MGS formula and introduces just enough new (or respectfully influenced) ideas to ensure that it stands on its own as a game". Edge concluded that "it is faithful to its fans, its premise and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal", while IGN UK describe it simply as "the ultimate Metal Gear game" and "a dazzling, heart-lifting, voyage of discovery".
The new control scheme ("the ideal balance of intuitivness and range"), camouflage system and shift to more free-form, "replayable" gameplay (in particular the Drebin Points system and alternatives to "stealthy" play) were particularly highly praised with a few minor annoyances. The variety of set-piece events, details such as the "psyche" meter, and healthy provision of secrets were also remarked upon. Eurogamer tempered their overall praise with concern that one of the chapters may induce "ennui", but noted that the game quickly recovered, while Edge expressed mild disappointment that the "Beauty and the Beast" unit compare poorly to the previous title's main foes, the "Cobra Unit".
The game was also lauded for its technological and artistic achievements, with Edge describing the "Otacon" character as "the real star", and "a gaming revolution" while they found the game's score to be superior to that of many Hollywood offerings. The magazine felt that the few visual shortfalls (such as texture detail) did nothing to detract from the game's overall quality. IGN UK comment that the attention to detail in both visuals and audio represent "sublime brilliance", and remark upon innovations such as the use of split-screen.
Criticism of the game was largely leveled at the storyline, which reviewers found at times to be confusing or poorly executed and with IGN UK advising players to revisit the earlier titles for clarity. However the overall result was praised as emotionally engaging and topical, and characters such as Liquid Ocelot were singled out for the quality of their depiction. It was generally conceded that although the use of cut scenes is more intrusive than it needs to be (comprising "about half of the content of the game" by one estimate, and which "might make you crave action, or wonder why they couldn't have been turned into interactive sequences"), the style is somewhat appropriate given the rest of the series ("in many ways it's a vindication of Kojima's unique interpretation of the videogame medium") and unlikely to trouble fans. The addition of a pause function for these story sequences was universally welcomed.
Edge and Eurogamer alike concluded that although the game represents an apotheosis of the series style, it ultimately fails to revitalise it, and will not win over new fans. IGN UK were concerned that the game's hype and widespread praise may lead to disappointment, but feel that objectively, the game is a "masterpiece".

Memorable MGS4 Quotes
Old Snake: I'm no hero... Never was. I'm just an old killer... Hired to do some wet work.
[holds up Snake]
Johnny Sasaki: Drop your weapon!
[Snake holds up his hands and turns around]
Old Snake: You haven't even taken the safety off, rookie.
Johnny Sasaki: Careful, I'm no rookie! I'm a ten year vet.
[looks closer to check. Snake uses CQC to snatch his rifle and throw him to the floor]
Old Snake: How the hell did you ever survive ten years?
Colonel Roy Campbell: War is to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th; the pillar that supports the global economy.
[on the Beauty and the Beast Unit]
Drebin: War transforms us, Snake. Into beasts.
Old Snake: Now you're a mere mortal, just like us.
Vamp: But can you kill this mere mortal?
Otacon: Look.
Old Snake: It's Naomi.
Otacon: ...And Vamp!
Old Snake: The Beauty and the Beast...
Vamp: You, too... Immortal?
Raiden: No. I just don't fear death.
[the two are badly wounded]
Ed: You and me... We were great partners.
Jonathan: No... Great friends.
Big Boss: [to Snake] If you had been in my place back then, maybe you wouldn't have made the same mistakes I did. Ever since the day I killed The Boss with my own hands, I... was already dead.
Big Boss: Boss... you were right. It's not about changing the world. It's about doing our best to leave the world... the way it is. It's about respecting the will of others, and believing in your own.
Raiden: [introduction scene] Snake, it's my turn to protect you...
Vamp: How about it undying man? care to die too?
Raiden: I'm sorry but I can't die yet.
Big Boss: [to Solid Snake] I never thought of you as a son, but I always respected you as a soldier... and as a man.
Raiden: I am lightning, the rain transformed...

The score to Metal Gear Solid 4 was led by Harry Gregson-Williams, his third Metal Gear Solid soundtrack, and Nobuko Toda, who provided music for Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Acid 2. Other contributors are Konami employees Shuichi Kobori, Kazuma Jinnouchi, Akihiro Honda, and Sota Fujimori. Directed by Norihiko Hibino, GEM Impact employees Yoshitaka Suzuki and Takahiro Izutani also made compositions late in the game's production. It was revealed in an interview with Norihiko Hibino that the team in fact wrote 90 minutes of music for the game's cutscenes, only 15 minutes of which made its way onto the official soundtrack.
There are two vocal themes for the game. The opening theme, "Love Theme", is sung by Jackie Presti and composed by Nobuko Toda. The ending theme, "Here's To You", is sung by Lisbeth Scott. Before the release of the game, "MGS4 - Theme of Love - Smash Bros. Brawl Version" was provided for Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the Shadow Moses Island level. The Metal Gear Solid Main Theme, composed by Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase, was notably omitted from the soundtrack, and the soundtrack of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. In an interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly, Norihiko Hibino stated that the company had difficulties with "Russian composers who said we stole their music", referring to an occasion when a group of Russian games journalists presented Hideo Kojima with a composition by Georgy Sviridov and claimed this had been plagiarised to create the theme. Hibino states that "they didn't actually", however the company was "too sensitive about the situation" and elected to drop the theme.
The official soundtrack was released on May 28, 2008 by Konami Digital Entertainment under the catalog number GFCA-98/9. It consists of two discs of music and 47 tracks. A soundtrack album was also packaged with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition.
MGS4 Weapons
Ak102
The AK-102 is a carbine variant of the AK-101 rifle, a modernized Kalashnikov design produced by the Russian Federation for export. The AK-102 is chambered for the common 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, using a 30-round magazine. It is sometimes fitted with the GP30 grenade launcher. While the AK-102 shares a similar design to the ubiquitous AK-47, the AK-102's modifications include a revised sight system, a new handgrip, and plastic furniture to replace the AK-47's wood furniture, making the gun lighter and easier to handle. The AK-102's short barrel sacrifices long-range accuracy for maneuverability and comfort.
DSR-1
The DSR 1 rifle is designed, manufactured and marketed by the German company DSR-precision GmbH and was (until 2004) marketed also by the German company AMP Technical Services as a specialized sniper rifle for police sharpshooters. It has been adopted by the German GSG 9 counter-terrorist unit, as well as by other European special police units and agencies.
FGM-148 (Javelin)
The FGM-148 Javelin is an American-made man-portable anti-tank guided missile fielded to replace the Dragon antitank missile which could not effectively engage or destroy enemy armored vehicles. Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance. The system takes a top-attack flight profile against armored vehicles (attacking the top armor which is generally thinner) but can also take a direct-attack mode for use against buildings or fortifications. This missile also has the ability to engage helicopters in the direct attack mode. The missile reaches a peak altitude of 150m in top attack mode and 50m in direct fire mode.
MP5SDS
The MP5SDS is a variant of the German-made Heckler & Koch MP5, a submachine gun with countless users since the early years of the Cold War. The SDS makes use of an integral suppressor which in-game does not degrade per shot, and uses 30-round box magazines with 9x19mm bullets.
M14 EBR
The M14 EBR is a shorter modernized version of the M14 rifle initially developed in 1957 for the U.S. military. Designed as a replacement infantry rifle for the M1 Garand, the M14 saw a significant amount of use in Vietnam before it was replaced as an infantry rifle by the M16, though it continues to serve as a sniper rifle for other armed forces. The EBR variant has multiple rails that allows it to be customized with multiple accessories. In MGS4, it can be modified three times for distant sniping. Its used by PMC forces as their standard sniper and marksman rifle.
M4 Custom
The M4 Custom is an in-game take on the the M4A1, a highly modifiable carbine based on the M16 rifle primarily used by the US Military. Introduced in 1994 as a complement for that firearm, the M4A1 was designed as an ideal rifle for CQC/CQB (close quarters battle), and was also made to be extremely modular with additional accessories; due to this factor and ever-increasing use for the size and maneuverability advantage, it has displaced the M16 with many US military units, although in-game by 2014 the XM8 is used by Rat Patrol Team 01, the Army/Marine team at the Volta River, and later the troops onboard USS Missouri.
M60E4
This firearm is the latest generation of the M60 family and incorporates a number of improvements over other versions. Externally, it looks somewhat like the M60E3, but it has other internal changes and improvements. It features a different forward grip and is also a more reliable weapon than the other M60s. The M60E4/Mk 43 has higher pull for the belt, and is available in a variety of configurations. It is also possible to convert some older models to this standard. The M60E4 and Mk 43 were primarily developed in the 1990s. First the E4, and soon after the Mk 43—these early Mk 43 had some distinct differences from the E4 (such as a duckbill flash suppressor), though by the 2000s these distinctions seemed to have ended.
A mounted Mk 43 Mod 0 (M60E4) (later model) is crewed by a Seabee of NMCB-15 (Naval Mobile Construction Battalion), on a convoy in Iraq in May 2003.
This version also has another designation under the Navy, Mk 43 Mod 0. The Mk 43 Mod 0 was developed for the U.S. Navy SEALs to replace their existing stock of M60E3 machine guns fitted with shorter "assault barrels". These weapons are identical to standard M60E4s, with the exception of the barrel length, and can be used either as suppressive fire or direct fire weapons, at least in terms of theory and training. The Mk 43 Mod 1 adds significantly more rail attachment points to the weapon's receiver cover and handguard.
M870
The Remington Model 870 is a U.S.-made pump-action shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms Company, Inc. It is widely used by the public for target shooting, hunting, and self-defense. It is also commonly used by U.S. police and the U.S. military.
The Remington 870 was the fourth major design in a series of Remington pump shotguns. John Pedersen designed the fragile Model 10 (and later the improved model 29). Working with John Browning, Pedersen also helped design the Model 17 which was adopted by Ithaca as the Ithaca 37 and also served as the basis for the Remington 31. The Model 31 was well-liked, but struggled for sales in the shadow of the Winchester Model 12. Remington sought to correct that by introducing in 1950 a modern, streamlined, rugged, reliable, and relatively inexpensive shotgun, the 870 Wingmaster.
Sales of the 870 have been steady. They reached 2 million guns by 1973 (ten times the number of Model 31 shotguns it replaced). By 1996, spurred by the basic "Express" model, sales topped seven million guns. The 870 holds the record for best-selling pump gun in U.S. history.
Mk17
Developed for USSOCOM's SCAR program, the Mk. 17 is a variant of the highly modular weapon designed to be adaptable to future weapon upgrades thanks to its multiple mounting rails. The weapon can easily be configured in mere minutes for CQC, tactical or precision fire thanks to its interchangeable barrels. It also is ideal as a Personal Defense Weapon due to its compact size and design.
In MGS4, the MK.17's short-barreled CQB variant is the standard-issue assault rifle for the PMC personnel and has four accessory attachment points, adding to its flexibility in battle. It fires 7.62mm x 51mm NATO rounds from a straight 20-round box magazine.
FN P90
The P90 is a Belgian designed submachine gun. The weapon’s name is an abbreviation of Project, and the number 90, which specifies a weapon system of the 1990s. The P90 is considered a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW), and was designed as a compact but powerful firearm for vehicle drivers, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces and anti-terrorist units.
Developed between 1986–1987 at Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, the P90 features a compact bullpup design, ambidextrous grip and a polymer and alloy-based construction. The weapon contains several innovative features, including the proprietary 5.7x28mm ammunition.
The P90 and variants are in use by over twenty military and police forces worldwide, and sports models are popular among civilian shooters.
SVD
The SVD , "Dragunov sniper rifle", is a 7.62 mm semi-automatic sniper rifle, developed in the former Soviet Union.
It was selected as the winner of a contest that included three competing designs: the first was a rifle (known as the SSV-58) designed by Sergei Simonov, the second (prototype designated 2B-W10) – by Alexander Konstantinov, and the third rifle, the SVD-137, was a design by Evgeny Dragunov. Extensive testing of the rifles in variable environmental conditions resulted in E. F. Dragunov’s design being accepted into service in 1963. At the same time an initial pre-production batch of 200 rifles was assembled, and from 1964 serial production was carried out at Izhmash.
Since then, the SVD has become the standard squad support weapon of several countries, including those of the former Warsaw Pact, among them Poland (since 1966). Licensed production of the rifle was established in China (Type 79 and Type 85) and Iraq (as the Al Kadesiah).
VZ-83
The Vz-83 is a variant of the Vz-61 Scorpion Submachine Gun. This model was produced in the early 1980's as a variant to make use of 9x18mm Makarov pistol rounds. It is very similar to the Vz-61 in that it has a foldable wire stock, an underbarrel-mounted laser sight, and fixed iron front and rear sights. However, unlike the Vz-61, this model has a twenty-round straight-box magazine as opposed to the thirty- round curved boxes that it's older cousin has. The first time you can use this gun in MGS4 is in Eastern Europe when EVA gives it to you preceeding the bike chase segment of Act Three, or Third Sun.

MGS4 Marketing
At a press conference on May 13, 2008, Hideo Kojima announced a marketing campaign and agreements with several companies to promote the game. Apple computers and monitors feature in the game and an Apple iPod is an in-game item that Snake can use to change the background music, listen to in-game podcasts and collect hidden songs scattered throughout the game. ReGain Energy Drinks are used in the game as a Psyche gauge booster, and Sony Ericsson mobile phones are used, specifically by Naomi and Vamp.
Konami and Ubisoft put an unlockable costume in the game for Snake, Altaïr from the Ubisoft stealth game Assassin's Creed. Initially revealed on April Fool's Day 2008, Kojima later announced that it would actually be in the game, unlockable by doing "something special". To obtain the attire, the player must acquire the "Assassin Emblem", a nod to the game's title (or input a password in the Extras section).
Konami had originally planned to organize grand launch events in Tokyo, but some of them were canceled with the "safety of participants in mind" in light of the Akihabara massacre on June 8, 2008.
Also, in Act 4, when Snake enters Shadow Moses, Snake receives a call from Otacon, instructing to insert a second disc into the console (itself a reference to the original Metal Gear Solid), but then says that there is no need as the disc inserted is a dual layered Blu-ray Disc, and that the game is on the PlayStation 3.

Codec:
Otacon
When in the canyon before entering the Warhead Storage Building on Shadow Moses, you can call Otacon to hear a somewhat funny conversation. It starts out with Otacon asking Snake how he defeated Raven and his tank during the first Metal Gear Solid. After Snake responds with "Grenades," Otacon says he asked an officer in the Army for advice on an infantrymen taking on a tank. The Army officer responded with "Don't." It is then that Otacon professes what a badass Snake is, going so far as to call him "The Shit."
During the battle with Screaming Mantis, change the controller settings to another port to hear a Codec conversation between Snake and Otacon about Snake's inability to move.
Otacon has a story about virtually every room in Act 4 that Snake encountered in the original MGS. Sometimes you have to call him twice to hear it.
After you beat Crying Beauty, a pack of wolves will appear. If you kill one of them and call Otacon, he will be disgusted.
In Act 3 finish the resistance members one by one and call Otacon each time and see how he goes nuts.
Rosemary
Shaking the controller during a call with Rose will cause her breasts to shake.
After defeating Crying Wolf, kill one of the wolf dogs and call Rose.
During the battle with Screaming Mantis, Campbell (through Rosemary's codec) calls Snake to tell him to change controllers like in MGS1. However, Rosemary then tells Campbell that it will not work.
While fighting Screaming Mantis, call Rosemary to hear Colonel Campbell's suggestion to shoot the Psycho Mantis bust.
If you call Rosemary several times, you will hear a funny story between Rose and Colonel Campbell about how terrible Rosemary's food is.
Call Rose after you die and continue. Snake will tell Rose about how he keeps having dreams about dying. You can do this multiple times, and get different responses.
Call Rosemary too many times and she will ask Snake "What has gotten into you"?
Each day you play the game, Rosemary wears different sweaters.
Ghosts:
As with some Metal Gear Solid games, there are several Ghosts that can be seen by taking photographs of certain places using the in-game camera:
In Otacon's old lab, take a picture of the Policenauts poster. The ghost here is Hideo Kojima.
After beating Crying Wolf, take a picture of the doorway to the right of the doorway which leads to the Blast Furnace or the wolf who appears after you kill/KO her beauty form. The ghost here is Sniper Wolf.
Take a picture of Liquid's crashed Hind D.
Take a photo of the hallway where Gray Fox killed all a bunch of soldiers just before Otacon's office.
Take a photo of REX's right foot to see a ghost of Gray Fox and take a picture of REX's cockpit to see Liquid Snake.
In the bridge after you fought Vulcan Raven in MGS, take a photo to the waterfall
In Otacon's old lab, take a picture of the supercomputers. The ghost here is the Arms Tech president, Kenneth Baker.

In front of the the elevator in the Tank Hangar is a ghost of Decoy Octopus.
In the hallway which contained the laser/gas trap from MGS1, take a photo of the bottom right corner whilst in it.The ghost here is the DARPA chief Donald Anderson.
In the lower vent which leads to the tank hanger take a photo of the steel directly in front of Snake before the very first right. The ghost here is of Master Miller.
In the canyon where Snake fought the tank, take a photo of the rock area to the left of the door which leads to the nuclear warhead storage building. The ghost here is Vulcan Raven.
In the Hallway with the Electrical floor, take a picture of the hole the GEKKO jumped through on the ceiling.

MGS4 Walkthrough / Act 5
Ship's Bow
As soon as the mission starts, run to the right, until you reach the wall, then take out some sort of scoped weapon. If you look to the top right of your screen, you should see a FROG jump from the roof to the top of a flight of stairs, shoot it in the head. Then, depending on what difficulty, your playing on, one or more FROGS will drop down, shoot them in the head, then run forwards. As soon as you've rounded the big crate, you should see a narrow corridor with explosive barrels to the right and a ladder on your left, ignore both of these things and start crawling along the ground, make sure your octocamo changes, this should give you around 90% camouflage. Two more FROGS will be in the next area, shoot them in the head. More will drop down, shoot them in the head. Run forwards till you get to a big barrel on your right, wall press past the barrel, then start crawling and take out a scoped weapon. FROGS will be at the end of this corridor thing, shoot them in the head. Run to the end of the corridor will you cant go any further. You will notice a gekko guarding the door you need to get into, ignore it for now, instead take out the sniper atop the large tower. The USS Missouri will destroy the gekko guarding the door. Once it has been destroyed, wait for the other gekko to come check it out, then run and open the door, run straight into the elevator and your done.
Command Center
All you have to do is here is kill/tranquilize the FROGs. There will be many of them, so make use of the computers and walls around you to take cover. Stay on the walls of the room so you will not get shot from behind. Watch out for the ones sniping you from the balcony. Use a 200 round machine gun or p90 if you have one, it makes it much easier, and watch out for the snipers.
Screaming Mantis
After defeating all those FROGs, the final member of the Beauty and the Beast Unit arrives – Screaming Mantis. The battle reeks of the battle with Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid, just don't try to change your controller port!
If you talk to Otacon, he'll guess she's using people's nanomachines to take control of them. Notice you can't aim at her. The gun keeps getting nudged aside... Use the Syringe on yourself.
1. She makes the FROGs shoot at you.
2. She makes Meryl shoot at you.
3. She makes Meryl shoot herself.
Use a CQC chokehold on Meryl, and inject her with the Syringe.
Keep shooting Mantis, but notice that she takes no damage, but when you hit one of the dolls, she buckles in pain. You need the Mantis doll, but the Sorrow doll is a nice trophy. You need to shoot it around 4 or 5 times before she will drop it, and when she does, hurry to grab it.
Shoot her once with the Mantis doll and shake the SIXAXIS to kill her. It counts as a non-lethal kill as well, so don't worry if you're aiming for a No-Kill Run.
Screaming Beauty. This fight is the same as the other Beauty fights. The Screaming Mantis doll is in the doorway you came from. Collecting all the dolls unlocks the Solar gun. Screaming Beauty facecap if you kill her non lethally.
[edit]
Missile Hanger
There will be Scarabs for the next few rooms, so use a chaff grenade and run through the hallway. If any of them grab Snake, just do a forward roll and keep on going. You can mow down a few to earn some Drebin Points, but there's no point in trying to kill them all: they just keep on coming. If you want to buy any discounted weapons for your next playthrough, now is your last chance!
Next, you will have to make Snake suffer through the hallway of microwaves. All you have to do is keep pressing Triangle when it tells you to and force Snake to the end of the hallway. This is possibly one of the most touching and heart wrenching scenes in the whole Metal Gear Saga...
Ship Exterior
The final battle with Liquid Ocelot is here. Instead of shooting him, you must fight him with your bare fists. Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon! The battle is split into three parts. If you die in one of the later fights, you'll have to start at the beginning.
Liquid Snake
This fight is similar to how you fought Liquid Snake in MGS and is the easiest of the three fights. A good tactic to use is to corner Liquid and repeatedly hold L1 and then press R1 for a strong punch. If you do this correctly, you will keep attacking him before he even gets a chance to hit you, saving your life for the next fights.
DID YOU KNOW that when you press the TRIANGLE button to make Snake do a taunt, Liquid Ocelot won't come near you, no matter how many times you taunt!!!! a little secret here is to taunt when Liquid Ocelot is taunting you, because when he taunts, his life goes back up a bit. But if you taunt when he does, then YOUR LIFE GOES BACK UP TOO!!!! This will only work if you taunt when he does! Keep that in mind throughout the battle!
Liquid Ocelot
Now Liquid Ocelot's attacks are much stronger, so be careful of when he unleashes a really powerful punch that can take out 1/4 of your health. This fight is much tougher than the first one, so be careful near him. A good tactic to use is after he uses his powerful punch, use CQC against him by holding R1 near him or use the dash attack by pressing X and then R1. Then, stay some distance from him so that he will do the powerful punch attack again and repeat.
Ocelot
For the third fight, it is a CQC brawl. Hence, you can expect Ocelot to use a lot more CQC then you ever want to think about. You can also CQC him, or just beat the crap out of him the old-fashioned way. But be warned, if you get to close to Ocelot, he can headbutt you, which is not only unblockable, but can also deal a great deal of pain. And the sleeper hold. GAAHH! This is the most annoying attack Ocelot has, which forces you to flick the control stick back and forth until you free yourself. Use the triangle prompt to treat him to a nice elbow strike to the kidneys.
After finishing this fight, both Snake and Ocelot will have become tired out and you'll have a final easy fight, where all you have to do is press R1 near him, eventually ending Liquid Ocelot's life, completing the game. Be careful, though, as it is possible to die during this section of the fight.
Now sit back and watch the long, but well deserved ending!

MGS4 Walkthrough / Act 4
Heliport
Anyone who has played the first Metal Gear Solid way back on PS will be aware of what's going on here. It’s the initial insertion to Shadow Moses Island, ported straight from MGS1. You don't have to complete it, but if you succeed you get the Facecamo from the MGS model of Solid Snake, which is just the low-resolution Snake head from the first game.
When the scene starts you can either go north towards the searchlights and wait for one to start moving away from you, or follow it across the heliport and down the stairs to the west. Stepping in the Spot Light will activate an Alert. Alternatively you can head right, towards the boxes. Make your way down, keeping in the mind the guard who will come down and that he will notice your footprints.
Move north to the Cargo truck. To the northwest is a camera which will activate an alert, but you can sneak past it by pressing to the wall. On easy levels, you can crawl through the vent beneath the camera, but on higher difficulties, there'll be a sleeping guard there, so you'll have to either, press against the cargo truck and knock it, this will wake the guard so he comes searching for you, when he comes around the truck run the other way, being mindful of the camera and crawl through the duct just north west of the trucks cabin, or, sneak to the east beneath another camera. Climb the stairs, and wait for the guard at the top to walk past before continuing forward. Hide in the nook to the right of the searchlight and wait for the guard to come back. Follow him as he walks past your position (keeping your distance), then crawl though the duct half way along this walkway. The screen fades and a cut scene shows Old Snake waking up telling Otacon that he's "having that dream again".
Snowfield and Heliport
This place reeks... of nostalgia... Ahhh...
Once you regain control of Snake, you'll find yourself in the middle of a snow field. Due to a blizzard, there is hardly any visibility. However, this can easily be countered by switching to the NV mode on your Solid Eye. Around the area there are a number of ammo crates you can collect; once you're ready head up the slope to the east. There will be a single Gekko patrolling the area. As it moves away from your position, slide down the bank and crawl through the rocks to the other side. From here, run to the west and head up towards the Heliport.
The Heliport is the same area from the dream before, only there are a few differences. There are a number of items lying around so you can collect and reminisce in equal measure due to there being no enemies. Occasionally you will get those audio flash backs from the original MGS. Also, you get to hear The Best Is Yet To Come. Head towards the center of the helipad to grab some Chaff grenades, and then go north and crawl beneath the truck to collect the Mk. 23 SOCOM which was the main pistol used by Snake in MGS, and head to the stairs on the right. Head up these stairs and crawl through the duct in the middle of the walkway.
As you’re crawling through a few rats will notice you and run away from you. Follow them to make your way through the duct. If you call Otacon, he will ask if you remember the way, Snake will mention his little, furry friends, referring to the rats that guided you through this same duct in MGS1. Continue through to the Tank Hanger.
Tank Hanger and Canyon
When you reach the broken end of the shaft, press Triangle at the prompt to hang from the shaft. In the corner is a Scarab, like the ones EVA destroyed in the resistance meeting area last Act. Once its scanning beam moves away from you, drop down and head behind the box to your left. Let the Scarab scan again. After a moment, the tank in the middle of the room will be clear of scouts, jump over the rail and drop, immediately go prone and crawl under the gap to the left of the doors. In here there are a bunch of Scarabs hanging on the wall. Once there beams are horizontal, crouch to the other end to reach the Canyon.
Two interesting facts I discovered while wasting time here on a "Chicken" emblem playthrough:
1 - The scanning beam of the Scarabs will not detect Snake if he is hiding immobile inside a Cardboard Box or Drum. So long as you equip the item and do not move while the beam scans over you, no Alert will be raised.
2 - By collecting the Chaff Grenades on the Heliport, passing through the Warhead Storage Building to the Snowfield and then doubling back to the Heliport, the Chaff Grenades will have respawned. If you wish to stock up now in order to attempt a Bandana-less playthrough later, here is one of the few places you can grab these things in large quantities.
On each side of this canyon there are two 'sleeping' Gekkos. If you're not interested in the items around you can simply crawl between them to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building and they won't attack. But if you're after a little thrill or a just want more items, you'll risk waking them up. If you do wake them, best thing to do is just run, run as fast as your little pixel legs can to the next building.
An easy way to grab the items without waking the Gekkos is to use the Metal Gear Mk. III. As long as you don’t touch the Gekkos with the Mk. III, you should be fine.
Nuclear Warhead Storage Building
Your goal is to go through the door at the north end of Floor 1, but you will soon discover that this door is locked.
Otacon will tell you that in order to open this door, the security system must be activated, and it can be done from his old office on Floor B2. He will give you a password to use.
In order for you to get there, Otacon will activate the power to allow you to use the elevator (located on the balcony). Take the elevator down to B2 and head to his old office by heading down the corridor, turning left and following the path round. You are now in the room where you first met Otacon and fought Gray Fox in the first game. Ahh... I love hating him.
A cut scene will occur and you will be prompted to enter the password into the computer terminal. Dont worry if you forgot it (Like me!) as Otacon has jotted it down. He will however make an amusing comment about Snake's memory failing him in old age.
This is where you enter those secret codes. My favorite is 14893. 100000 Drebin Points! Use them to buy the Mosin Nagant. You'll need it for the next boss fight if you want the Solar Gun.
After you regain control of Snake you will need to head back to the elevator and back up to Floor 1. Return to the main corridor and scream as a Gekko falls into the corridor! Shoddily made facility, this. You can try and sneak round it, blow it up with a flew blasts from the RPG or, for something a bit different, you can take the Mark III around the generator you deactivated years ago with the Nikita missile and use it to switch the electrified floor back on, frying the Gekko and netting you 5000 Drebin Points in one fell swoop. Head back to the elevator and back to Floor 1.
Head down to the door to the North once more and Otacon will take control of the Mark III to disable the security. While he's doing this, you will have to keep a Gekko busy, but a glitch renders it invincible to rockets. You can destroy it by equipping the Solid Eye, and it will reveal the Gekko's weak points. There is one on each leg. You can take them out with the M-4. Once both legs are shot the Gekko will squirm on the ground, run around to the top of his head for his final weak point, shoot there and destroy the Gekko, you can kill any Gekko this way. After three minutes, Otacon will deactivate the security and you can pass through the door to the next area.
Both Gekkos in this area can be taken out with the rail gun "very helpful if you’re trying to beat the game in under 5 hours."
Snowfield and Communications Tower
You arrive in a small area with a few goodies to pick up before heading West to the main snowfield (where you fought Sniper Wolf in MGS1).
You will now have to fight Crying Wolf (see what they've done there?).
This a sniper battle. Use your M82A2 or the Mosin Nagant. Equip the Solid Eye's Night Vision, crawl under a truck, and wait. The FROGs won't be able to find you under there.
You can also equip the Facecamo and allow the OctoCamo to adapt the snow’s color. Find a good area to lie in the snow. Granted this is somewhat dangerous because Wolf is stalking around, but I found it to be slightly easier than running around the buildings, because the FROGs won’t be able to spot you if you move around carefully and slowly.
1. Rail Gun. This is almost like a particle accelerator. Sniper. Thing.
2. Pounce! Smash. Owwee...
When Crying Wolf uses her Rail Gun, she reveals her head to scope in on you. Shoot her here to kill her easily. Also, you can shoot the smoke grenades on her hind legs if you are trying for a non-lethal kill.
One thing to remember is that Wolf can track you by scent. That means if the wind carries your scent towards Crying Wolf, she's gonna come charging at you.
The truck can be an asset, because the FROGs really can't get to you. Crying Wolf is a different matter all together. Her Rail Gun bullets will still damage you, so if you know she's aiming for you, pop her head, or get out of the truck.
Crying Beauty. Ugh. Not another one... you should know what to do. Beat Wolf non-lethaly, and the Wolf doll is right behind you when you start fighting the Beauty, beat her non-lethaly, blah blah blah facecap. You also get that shiny Rail Gun. It can kill a Gekko in a single fully charged payload to the head.
Once you regain control of Snake, there are a few rooms to look in around the perimeter of the snowfield, where you might find some goodies. When you're ready, head to the room to the West and go down the stairs towards the Blast Furnace, triggering a piece of Codec gold as Otacon tells you that you need to change the disc, forgetting briefly that technology has advanced since the PS1 days!
Blast Furnace and Casting Facility
Walk up to the main entrance, and you will find yourself in a large factory room with a conveyor belt in the center. Scarabs are all over the place and you can either attack all of them or sneak by them. The Saiga 12 is fun to use here.
Your best bet would be to take out the patrolling Gekkos and wait for the Evasion meter to go down, after that climb onto the conveyor belt and crawl down to the end, there will be three Scarabs that continually roll back and forth, hide behind the left hand box, and when it is clear make a run for it. Remember to don a Box or Drum if you need to evade a Scarab, but bear in mind that a Gekko will not be fooled by this simple disguise. If you are too lazy to sneak past the Scarabs and Gekkos, use a Chaff Grenade to stun the Scarabs and then pick the Gekko off with
Underground Base and Supply Tunnel
The boss fight with Vamp is different than most in the game. When you fight him, the MGL-140 with white phosphorous grenades is a great choice, as you can roast him multiple times. You have to "kill" him by depleting all of his health or psyche. Make sure you avoid his dashes and knives, as if he is on top of you when he knocks you down, he can knock you down again two more times, not allowing you to get up. When he's low on health/psyche, make sure you "kill" him when he is on the ground rather than on top of the rubble to make the next part easier.
Once you've "killed" him one time, he will revive himself due to his nanomachines. However, if he is standing on the ground, make sure you have the syringe equipped and run up to him. Stand behind him and hold R1 to hold him. Then, press triangle to inject the syringe into him, rendering his nanomachines useless.
Also, if you get the Solar Gun from the subsequent playthroughs, a single charged shot from the gun will take out all of Vamp's psyche. Guess something to do with vampires hating light.
For the next part, Raiden will be fighting Vamp, while all you have to do is shoot at the Gekkos and Suicide Gekkos that will be trying to destroy you and REX. Make good use of the Rail Gun by using it against them when it is fully charged or nearly fully charged.
Once Raiden has finally killed Vamp and both he and Naomi die, you take control of REX. Now you must get out of the base.
Escape from the Underground Base
Metal Gear REX has several different attacks. Use R2 to choose between the Gatling Guns, Anti-tank Rockets, and a laser. Just follow the tunnel along shooting at the Gekko that will attack you, but try to make it through the tunnel as quick as possible. If the Gekko start to overwhelm you, just plow straight through them. When you reach the end of the tunnel, you will be confronted by Liquid Ocelot piloting Metal Gear RAY.
Metal Gear RAY Boss Fight
RAY uses similar attacks to the ones he used in Metal Gear Solid 2, such as shooting with guns in his "arms" and firing missiles from his knees and back. He'll also use the water cannon at times. RAY can also close in and use melee style attacks. Hitting R1 will also allow REX to use similar kinds of attacks. Try not to use these unless you are sure they will work, as RAY is much more agile than REX and can easily dodge and counter melee attacks.
Try to focus on shooting RAY with the Gatling Guns to wear him down, occasionally switching over to the rockets which can knock off large chunks of his health at a time. When he shoots at you with missiles, use the Gatling Gun to shoot them down, which will leave him open for an attack.
Also, when you press X and move forward at the same time, REX will dash forward. Time it right, and CRASH! RAY will be stunned, which gives you the chance to inflict a special attack, such as headbutting RAY's head against a building, or lifting RAY up while frying it with a laser.
So long as you don't let up, this fight is really easy.

MGS4 Walkthrough / Act 3
Midtown South Sector
When you start, remove the disguise you start with and put on the Face-Camo. Follow the Paradise Lost resistance member. Just keep following him. He takes a different route on each difficulty level. If PMCs catch him, tranq them. DON'T KILL THEM. He will freak out and run away. Remember, he whistles.
A lot of events can occur in this section of the game, depending on the difficulty level. If you find certain bits difficult, try rushing ahead of the PL member and eliminating the guards ahead of him; otherwise he will take a detour, often leading to more trouble than his first route might cause. He will pause at certain intervals, and not proceed until you come near - what a generous soul he is! Almost like he WANTS to be followed...
Midtown Central Sector
See above.
Midtown Northwest Sector
Again, see above.
Midtown Northeast Sector
Look up!
Midtown North Sector
This place is easier to describe, as the Paradise Lost guy will dress up as a PMC. However, he keeps whistling and is unarmed, making him stand out amongst the genuine PMC troops. He still insists on taking the long route, no matter what you do to the other soldiers, so just follow on his heels until the jeep full of soldiers begins to patrol. On Solid Normal or lower, a lying-down Snake with full Facecamo can hide on the pavement from their prying eyes, but this might not prove enough on higher difficulties: use cars and other cover to evade them. You'll know he's the right guy when he changes back. This ends the sneakiest part of the game. To compensate, what follows is an action-packed bike chase!
Motorcycle Chase
Remember WAY back in Act One when I said to buy the Bizon sub-machine gun? This is where you need it. The Vz. 83 that EVA gives you is a piece of crap. Only 20 rounds in a mag. The Bizon on the other hand has 64 rounds in a mag. Just shoot everything in sight.
If you're going for no kills, this place is a nightmare - and if you want to use no Rations as well, on the higher difficulties, you will need to use your Tranq Pistol with all the skill of The Boss herself. Ignore the Gekkos, focusing upon the PMC jeeps and any the FROGS which jump on the van. Use Stun Grenades against the roadblocks, and try to snipe the legion of FROG troopers from as far away as possible. Remember you can still blow the Sliders up with a P90, though (nothing to kill there) and even take pot-shots at Raging Raven. The Solar Gun is a great asset here once you unlock it (fire at minimum power to save energy, as one hit will KO any foe in this scene), with V-Ring ammo in the Twin Barrel proving useful against the turret-gunners in nearby jeeps.
Echo's Beacon
Boss Fight!
Raging Raven is easier than Laughing Octopus. Plain and simple. Just shoot her when she appears and uses her only attack.
1. Her Grenade launcher. Foom... Bang! It has infinite ammo 'cause it's linked into her armor. It can overheat...
2. Jet exhaust. She will cause her jetpack to spout larger flames, and zooms around the room, roasting you if you get caught.
3. She also does a kind of strangle attack where she lifts you up in the air with her limbs. At that moment, shake your left control stick like there's no tommorow. However, getting out faster will only preserve your psyche, as you're gonna get hurt no matter how fast you escape.
Her unmanned drones will also attack the tower. If you destroy them, Raven will fly into a blind fury and blast grenades all over the place. This will cause the MGL-140 to overheat, causing her to lose use of it for a short while.
High-powered rifles and rocket launchers are the way to go in this battle. Also, Raging Raven will have to cool down her jetpack, causing her to rest on a building. Using the Solid Eye's NV mode helps to track her down. Once you find her, get a shot off her with a sniper, or just use a rocket.
Raging Beauty is identical to Laughing Beauty. Just keep shooting. The Raven doll is on the top floor if you beat Raven non-lethally. The Raging Beauty facecap is unlocked by beating the Beauty non-lethally. You also receive her MGL-140 Grenade Launcher. It can be lethal with standard grenades, or non-lethal with stuns.
An easy but slow way to kill Raging Raven is by going up to the very top of the tower and lying down in the corner with full Octocamo on. Whenever Raven loses sight of you (she'll say either "where are are you hiding" or "lost you") crawl out onto the balcony and snipe her. Then, when she comes looking for you, snipe her again and leg it for the cover of the inside of the tower where none of her attacks can reach you. If her flightpath doesn't take her past you then simply shoot a few of her drones down (heavy machine gun works best) she'll hover over you and look for you, this provides the perfect opportunity to snipe her.
The Rail gun is also effective and can kill her very quickly, though you won't have at this point if you are on your first play through. When she lies on a nearby rooftop, charge it up to full power and zoom in close for a headshot.
Another effective and easy way to beat Raven is to stand on the flight of stairs preferably in the corner of the stairs. When standing here wait until she flies into the building herself( she will take aim and try and shoot you but fear not you are protected by the pillars) simply take aim and shoot her in the head. You will be able to do this two, maybe three times if you’re lucky before she flies out again. Just stand there, wait for her to fly back in. It may take 2 minutes, and repeat!
If you're going for a non-lethal kill for Raging Raven, the Mosin-Nagant is your only choice. Fortunately, it can do decent damage to Raven's psyche.

MGS4 Walkthrough / Act 2
Cove Valley Village
When you start, make sure you have a suppressor on the M14EBR. Equip the Solid Eye's Night Vision mode, and take out the PMCs FARTHEST away from the rebels being held prisoner. Slowly take them out, as if you kill the ones guarding the rebels, the other ones will kill the rebels. If you save the rebels, they'll open the doors to the building closest to them. There are many items in there.
Follow the rebels. There are many alternate routes to take and it’s very easy to get lost.
Power Station
The Power Station is a target of the rebels. Following them is a good way to get here, but you won't find many items along the way.
There are two ways to go when you reach the Power Station. 1) Attack the compound with the rebels by going straight ahead; or 2) Proceed along the right, where you can find some snipers and a mortar emplacement. I recommend the right path, as the PMCs have machine gun nests. Use the mortars to blast 'em. If you have plenty of tranq ammo, you might prefer to send the soldiers to sleep (in warzones like this, any killed soldiers are quickly replaced) but stray bullets often kill the slumbering PMC troops anyway. War is cruel.
When the rebels eliminate the PMC defenses, they shut down the power to the facility - you can do this yourself by blowing up the machinery in the control room. It is possible to fire a rocket from the slope near the mortar emplacement, aiming over the wall and through the window, but it can be tricky; or you can simply storm inside and use explosives or high-powered guns to achieve the same effect. Climb up the climbable power pole, and carefully cross the wires. Drop down into the fenced area by the other pole to find even more items.
You'll meet with Drebin again. Follow the rebels to the next area. You'll find a secret rebel encampment, where you can pick up a Javelin, and the XM8. Head up a steep hill, and enter the next area.
Confinement Facility
The Confinement Facility is even better defended than the Power Station. Strykers and choppers and PMCs oh my! Use an RPG to kill the Stryker, and sneak into the facility.
In the back of the Confinement Facility, there are prisoners. SAVE THEM! Why? To be nice. No matter how hard you try, the PMCs keep respawning. Leave the area before the choppers get there.
Vista Mansion
You're free to make any jokes at the expense of Bill Gates and the failing Vista. The rebels will be attacking the PMCs outside the compound. Wait until you get a cutscene showing a bulldozer appears. Cover the bulldozer until it smashes through the gates.
Enter the compound. You can find an iPod song near the right wall. Enter the building the PMCs are protecting, and make your way to the red dot on the map.
The door is locked and blocked. Head up the stairs and onto the roof. Another mortar emplacement is here, use it to blast the PMCs on the turrets. Jump down the skylight, head down the stairs, head through the cellar, and heal before going up the ladder.
Research Lab
First things first. RUN!!! FROGs are on their way. Hide under a bed if you're going for a no-alert playthrough. Kill them, then run around until Laughing Octopus screams "SNAAAAAKE!"
Laughing Octopus has four different attacks.
1. Her P90. She'll shoot at you if you let her. Blast away at her with the M4 to knock her down, then keep on firing.
2. Ink Cloud. She'll crawl into a ball and disappear. She also leaves behind homing bombs. Again, RUN! You can destroy them with accurate shooting (or the Auto-Aim) but only if you have some distance between yourself and them.
3. The Tentacles. Pow. Wham. She hits you with them. Also, she may deflect your bullets. When she rears back to strike, shooting her seems to achieve nothing; best to dodge away, preferably backwards out of range.
4. Rolling. It looks like she'll use her ink, but she rolls towards you and deals a terrifying amount of damage. Get on top of a bed to avoid it.
She's also a master at camouflage. She can mimic everything in the lab including, but not limited to, A FROG body in armor, the anatomical dummy, a HUGE Mk. II, the paintings, even Naomi.
When you deplete her health or stamina, she transforms into Laughing Beauty. If you depleted Octopus's stamina, you can find the Octopus doll on the bed in the NW room.
Laughing Beauty has no real attacks unless you get close to her, but she can dodge your bullets. Just keep firing. If you defeat her non-lethally (Stun Grenades or the Solar Gun being prime choices for doing so), you receive the Laughing Beauty facecap for your shiny new Face-Camo.
Mountain Trail
You need to find Naomi now. Raiden will call and tell you to "Pay attention to the environment. Listen for unusual bird calls. Look for broken branches and trampled grass that the target may have caused." Yeah, Raiden telling Snake what to do? Kids these days, got no respect...
Use the Solid Eye's Night Vision to easily track Naomi's footprints. By crawling with Facecamo equipped, you can easily (if slowly) slip by the sentries left to delay and ambush you.
When you reach the river, go into the river and head left. You'll find a small crop-circle. Step into it and you'll hear the AI Colonel's speech about his alien abduction in SoL. Listen to it and you will receive 1000 Drebin Points.
Eventually, you'll see a PMC setting up a Claymore. Neutralize him and look at the footprints. You should be able to see some handprints. Follow them to find a Ration, some Noodles, and a weird metal plate with the developer's hand prints.
You'll eventually hear a helicopter. That means you're close. Enter the tunnel to finish the area.
Stryker Escape
Now you'll be on Drebin's Stryker. If you do not want any kills, you don't have to worry about killing the Gekkos as killing Gekkos do not count as kills, but do offer extra Drebin Points. However, the power suit guys do, so be careful. All you really need to do is wait for Drebin to move. Watch out for the Zombie soldiers. They seem to be invincible to everything EXCEPT the turret. Just knock 'em off the Stryker if they attack you, with CQC or V-Ring shotgun blasts (for the not-killers) or the turret gun for those immune to the pangs of guilt. I know from experience that it's confusing when you keep getting 4 kills and you don't know from where. It's the powered suits people! So now you know.
When an MGS appears, shoot the turret to disable it. Just keep shooting.
Marketplace
There will be Gekkos all over the place looking for you, so make sure you stay out of their way and avoid their kicks, which can take out 3/4 of your health. You have to run to Otacon's helicopter, so make sure you look at your radar to see where you have to go. All you have to do is just run and maybe pick up some of the items lying on the ground from the markets that the Gekkos knock over. Staying on the left-hand side of the area is more prudent than taking the alleys directly ahead of the entry point. Also, beware of the landing Gekko that lands a few seconds into the act; if you have rushed blindly into the plaza, it can crush Snake and cause an outright kill as it lands.
Chaff grenades (if you found any) work wonders here. They will scramble the Gekko's sensors for a short while. When approaching the barricades at the end of the area, two more chaff grenades can be found in the stall to the left: these can be hard to see unless the Solid Eye is equipped (and in this area, Rations make a far more sensible choice of item). After picking them up, dive through the fence past the final Gekko to freedom.
